Bringing in young players in to any club can be a gamble as there is not usually enough evidence to show that they are worth the risk.

However, that is not the case for Middlesbrough youngster Nathan Wood, who has attracted Premier League giants Manchester City and Manchester United, according to the Mirror.

His performances have alerted Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho, who are keen to add him to their ranks.

In light of this news, West Ham should raid the duo’s pursuit of the 16-year-old whizkid, as he is the perfect solution to their defensive midfield problems.

Wood has had the opportunity to unleash his potential during Middlesbrough’s pre-season under boss Tony Pulis, who decided to make him more involved in their games.

The Hammers need a defensive midfielder to round off their triumphant summer of spending, and there is no better way to do that than swoop for the versatile talent of Wood – as well as operating as a centre-half, he can also use his defensive capabilities in the midfield.

This is an area in which the Irons have been lacking, and they would not be taking a risk on the young ace, as he has already shown people what he can do playing for Boro.

He has already established himself as an England youth international, which is quite the achievement for someone so young – and boss Manuel Pellegrini needs to get the front of the queue for his signature.

When the Championship side played Rochdale in pre-season friendly in mid-week, he took his opportunity and grasped it with both hands by delivering an impressive display.

He plays like someone far beyond his years, and he would be a welcome addition to the West Ham team in their search for a defensive midfielder.

Wood is definitely a young player who Pellegrini should be taking a risk on.
