West Ham have joined the chase to sign Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper reports on their website the Hammers are keen to recruit reinforcements to their midfield, and they have identified the central maestro – who is on £120,000-a-week (Spotrac) – as the player to help them do that.

Pellegrini still thinks the midfield needs strengthening despite splashing £108 million on signings this summer, including the likes of Andriy Yarmolenko and Felipe Anderson.

Drinkwater only starred once for the Blues during last season despite joining in 2017, and still has four years left to run on his current contract at Stamford Bridge.

OPINION

The acquisition of Danny Drinkwater would be yet another top-quality signing by Pellegrini. The 28-year-old may have not had the best year in West London, but he definitely has the ability to strengthen the midfield. The club have already signed Jack Wilshere on a free transfer, and their combination in the centre of midfield would be the envy of many top-flight teams. Drinkwater is undoubtedly seeking out regular football as it does not look like he will be getting near the first team at Chelsea, especially now they have signed Jorginho who operates in the same role – but he is very likely to get that at West Ham. He needs the regular football to prove why Chelsea bought him in the first place and there is no better place to do that than at a club who will be in one their most promising seasons to date.
