West Ham are near to securing a deal for playmaker Luke Thomas at Championship outfit Derby County, according to Gloucestershire Live.
The newspaper claims that the Hammers are close to signing the 19-year-old attacking midfielder for a fee in excess of £1million.
It is understood that his former club Cheltenham could make £50,000 as part of his move to the London Stadium if Derby are promoted via the play-offs.
Thomas has been a breakthrough star at Derby this season and won their Young Player of the Year award, while he has managed two first-team appearances so far.
Good move for West Ham?
West Ham are likely to play a minimal seven-figure fee for Thomas and that is a fairly large sum for someone who is yet to prove themselves at senior level.
He has been a key player for Derby’s Under-23s side this campaign and can play as either a right-winger or a more centrally advanced playmaker.
Thomas could have a bright future in the game, but is only going to link up with the Hammers youth team.
David Moyes’ team needs major reconstruction in the summer transfer window and that £1million-plus fee could be spent elsewhere.
