West Ham handed their survival hopes a considerable boost last weekend with a 3-0 victory over fellow strugglers Southampton, pushing the Hammers five points clear of the relegation zone.

David Moyes’ side still have plenty to do to mathematically secure their status but there’s many that feel the hard work has been done, including former West Ham man Alan Devonshire.

Whilst the Hammers need more results to ensure they won’t suffer a drop to the Championship, the former Irons ace believes that the club will ‘definitely’ retain their Premier League status. Speaking to the Newham Recorder, he said:

“It was a brilliant result on Saturday and I was so pleased for everyone, especially the fans. Hopefully it is onwards and upwards for them now. It sounded like everyone came together and scoring the early goal helped, so I’m delighted for the club.”

“They will stay up. They will definitely stay up now and do what they need to do in the summer.”

West Ham’s run-in begins on Sunday with a London derby against Chelsea, which is followed by a number of other difficult ties against Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.
