West Ham are ready to secure the future of one of their prized defensive talents, with reports stating a significant contract upgrade will be handed to a young defender.

The Daily Mail reports that the Hammers are ready to hand Declan Rice a new contract worth £25k-a-week to keep him at the London Stadium, almost tripling the current wages of the young centre-half.

19-year-old Rice has earned a number of first-team opportunities this season and has proven his worth to David Moyes’ side, with the Scottish boss showing his faith in the young defending by sanctioning the recent departure of experienced Portuguese international Jose Fonte.

Whilst the majority of Rice’s opportunities this season have come off the bench, further first-team opportunities are likely to lie ahead in the remainder of the season and beyond, with the Hammers potentially having a key figure to build their defence around for the coming years.
