West Ham striker Andy Carroll has hailed the passion shown by the players in their 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town last night, saying ‘we played our hearts out’.

Carroll was a pivotal figure in the Hammers first victory of the new Premier League campaign, in which goals from Pedro Obiang and Andre Ayew helped lift Slaven Bilic’s men off the bottom of the table and get the new season off and running.

The Englishman, who was recently returning from injury, says he was thrilled with the desire of his team-mates and glad to get the three points.

“I think we needed this win. It’s been tough but the lads are behind the manager. We went out there and fought and we got the two goals.” he said speaking on whufc.com.

“It’s been a tough road for us but we went out there and we played our hearts out, and we got the three points.”

Carroll’s 81 minute display was his first in a West Ham shirt since April, and the number 9 has been working hard over the summer to get back to action as soon as possible.

“It’s nice to be back on the pitch. It’s been a long time over the summer. I’ve been working hard in training a lot and it’s paid off. I’m feeling good. It’s been tough but I’ve worked hard and now I’m back. Hopefully all the misery is behind me.

He then added: “I’ll be in bits tomorrow though, no doubt!”
