Winton Reid is in contention for a place in Slaven Bilic’s XI to face Manchester United on the opening day of the new season, says Football London.

The New Zealand international missed the end of last season through injury and has been working on his rehab throughout the summer. He was recently part of Terry Westley’s U23s side that beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2, and is expected to now return to full first team action.

The Hammers travel to Old Trafford this Sunday to face Jose Mourinho’s side in what will be a tough test for a new look West Ham. Slaven Bilic has made five signings already this summer and it is thought his business in the transfer window is not yet complete.

Should Reid be fit for Sunday’s clash, he will have to compete with Angelo Obgonna, Jose Fonte and James Collins for a position in the heart of the Hammers defence, however given the aforementioned’s shaky form in pre-season, the 29-year-old vice Captain could be given the nod.
