Hamburg defender Johan Djourou has moved closer to the exit door at the German club after being forced to train away from the first team squad with the Under 21 side, according to Bild.

The Swiss international’s contract expires in the summer and the centre back has been linked with West Ham in recent months by sources in the German media.

The 30 year old was the club’s captain at the start of the season but the arrival of Markus Gisdol as head coach in September has seem him been removed as captain in favour of Gotoku Sakai. He last started a match in the 8-0 thrashing by Bayern Munich in February, and has had to settle for a place on the bench since then.

He has now also been axed from the first team entirely after failing to make the match day squad for the 4-0 defeat against Augsburg last time out. Hamburg are struggling in 16th, and could be involved in a relegation playoff which may seem them drop into the second division.
