Former West Ham striker Ian Wright believes Sunderland forward Jermain Defoe would be interested in re-joining the Hammers if the opportunity arises in the future.

Defoe departed from the club under a cloud earlier in his career after putting in a transfer request following West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League in 2004, but Wright told the Sun Football Podcast that he thinks the young Defoe was poorly advised by an agent. Something that the player is now keen to put right later in his career:

“I’ve spoken to him in the past and he has said he’d love to be able to go back and right that wrong. We’re talking about a young guy who was badly advised.”

A source told the Sun that the Hammers remain keen on the 34 year old. They are pretty certain that the England international will be available on a free transfer if Sunderland are relegated at the end of the season.

Defoe has scored 14 goals in the Premier League this season and was named in the England squad by Gareth Southgate for the matches against Germany and Lithuania this week.
