West Ham defender Winston Reid currently has a release clause of just £15million in his contract, according to the Sun.

The existence of the release clause was confirmed by a West Ham insider who told the Sun that they plan to increase the clause when they offer a new deal to the New Zealand international in the summer to match team mate Jose Fonte’s salary:

“Winston will receive a new contract offer in the summer, he deserves parity. He is highly-valued by the club. We want to increase his buyout clause as well, there will be no risks taken to lose him cheap. He has given us so many years of good service and is respected that it’s only fair he’s one of the top earners.”

The Sun say that the release clause will be increased from £15m to £20m if the 28 year old agrees to a new deal. The centre back only signed a six year contract two years ago, but he will be given a reportedly wage increase to £70,000 a week in order to match Fonte.

The Portuguese defender signed from Southampton on a one and a half season deal in the January transfer window, but has so far failed to live up to expectations with 15 goals conceded, and no clean sheets, in the seven games he has played for the Hammers.
