The Sun are reporting that West Ham have made a bid of £4million for Southampton defender Jose Fonte. The Portuguese international was left out of the Saints’s 1-0 win over Liverpool in the EFL Cup last night, and is expected to leave during this transfer window.

The Hammers are said to be uncertain whether the offer will be enough to persuade Southampton to sell Fonte, and it has been reported that both Crystal Palace and Everton have also registered interest in the 33 year old.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman worked with Fonte for two years at Southampton and it has been suggested that this relationship could prove important in where the centre back decides to go.

Whether the Merseyside club follow up their interest with a bid for Fonte may decide whether the Hammers are successful with their own offer. Fonte has spent seven years at St Marys but with his current deal expiring in 2018, and after rejecting a pay rise and contract extension, his time on the south coast seems to have come to an end.
