West Ham are looking at the possibility of signing Darijo Srna from Shakhtar Donetsk, according to the Daily Star. There is however a big caveat to any deal going ahead: Srna’s proposed move to Barcelona would need to fall through.

Croatian international played under Slaven Bilic for the national side at the Euro 2012, and starred at both the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2012. He was also made captain of Croatia by Bilic back in 2009 with the full back declaring his admiration for the Hammers boss on a number of occasions.

Now 34, Srna’s contract at Shakhtar expires at the end of the season, meaning he is available for a very low fee in the January transfer window. He would likely prove to be an ideal short term fix for the problem position at right back.

Both Sam Byram and Michail Antonio have played in the position over the past two seasons, but no player has really made it their own.

Barcelona however are favourites for Srna as they attempt to find a solution to their own right back problem. Dani Alves departed for Juventus in the summer, and manager Luis Enrique has used midfielder Sergi Roberto in the position rather than recognised full back Aleix Vidal who he doesn’t rate.
