New West Ham United signing Alvaro Arbeloa has admitted that he rejected a move to AC Milan in favour of moving to the London Stadium.

The Spanish defender has signed a one-year contract with the Hammers and adds a much-needed option in the problem position of right-back.

Arbeloa has a wealth of experience playing international football for Spain and in the Champions League for Real Madrid.

The former Liverpool defender has confessed that he could have ended up at the San Siro and had offers in his homeland, but instead was enticed into joining Slaven Bilic’s men.

“The conversations with AC Milan were at an advanced stage but the Chinese takeover of the [Italian] club complicated the deal,” Arbeloa told Cadena Cope.

“I took a decision not to continue with this option and fortunately, this offer [West Ham] came along.”

“It’s difficult to leave Real Madrid and choose another destination. It’s like leaving heaven and having to choose a place on earth.

“I wanted an option that convinced me in every way.

“I had offers from Spain but I didn’t want to wear any other shirt than that of Real Madrid in Spain so I opted to leave.

“The choice of West Ham, the club, the city, the coach and the fans, felt good in every way and here I am.

“I’m very happy, I am where I want to be and I’m looking forward to playing.”

Arbeloa could well make his West Ham debut against Watford this weekend as Premier League action returns after the international break.

The Spanish veteran looks likely to be first choice at right-back and his tutelage will be key to Sam Byram in his development and progression at the London club.
