Dimitri Payet wants to stay at Marseille but a clause in his contract could force him to leave the club.

According to the French paper Le Parisien, Payet’s £62,000 per week wages will drop to £45,000 per week due to the fact that Marseille finished their domestic campaign outside of the Champions League places.

It is understood that West Ham have offered around £60,000 per week to the French international alongside an accepted £6 million bid for the creative playmaker.

Although the wage packet offered does match Payet’s salary last season, the Frenchman is believed to want closer to £80,000 a week. This is most likely a result of Payet’s excellent form last season. The midfielder provided 17 assists and scored seven goals in 36 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, making him the most creative midfielder in Ligue 1 for 2014/15.

If West Ham managed to snap up a player of Payet’s class it would certainly represent an alteration in playing style at the club. The player has spoken of his desire to carry on playing in Marcelo Bielsa’s system but the financial issues at the French club mean that they may have to sell their best players and Payet is certainly one of them.

Should West Ham up their wage offer for Payet?

Give him 80k a year and if he underperforms; doesn’t get a certain percentage of goals or assists from games playe, he gets less.

He looks like a very good player, Sakho, Valencia, Carroll etc would eat up those chances he’d create. We should be going all out to try get Gignac as well.

I would offer Payet 70k I’m sure he would accept that, it’s more than he got last year and a good offer., or we will lose him to another club
