FIVE reasons why it is good West Ham have no World Cup representatives

2014 World CupWhile it’s looking like a riveting summer at the World Cup, it’s certainly not a riveting summer for West Ham players because, well, none of our players are going to Brazil. We can try desperately to still count Pablo Armero as one of ours but, truth be told, we are the only Premier League club (including those three losers that got relegated) that doesn’t have a single representative at the World Cup. Rather than cry about it, here’s five reasons it’s not that bad that we have no players at the World Cup.

No Injury Worries for Hammers Fans

After watching England’s mind-numbing boring but insanely aggressive “friendly” against Honduras, the papers were full of praise—not for the player performances, but because we hadn’t picked up any injuries. We live in a world where not getting injured is good news – even if we drew against a ten-man team in a game where the weather was the most interesting bit. Injuries decimated our squad last year, and I still have Dean Ashton’s career-ending injury he received in the England squad stuck in my mind.

Plus you know every Arsenal fan was bricking it watching that vine of the Ox limping into a car. Not for me, thanks.

No Argument that any of our Players are “Too Good for the Club”

Picture the scene: hypothetically, let’s say a red-hot young footballer— let’s call him Le’var Nosirrom – plays for England whilst not having a long-term contract at West Ham. Le’var impresses, and suddenly the rumours of a slightly demanding and arrogant personality explode and we’ve got every football club in the league scrambling for his signature and over-inflating his sense of self before he’s had a chance to grow and develop. Yes, the plus side is we’d get a lovely dowry for him, but wouldn’t you rather have a chance to be the club that gets it right with this hypothetical young starlet?

Andy Carroll Isn’t Ready for the World Cup

This is a bit of a contentious one. Andy Carroll is getting so close to being back to his best— but he isn’t there right now. He’s had a hell of a year; injured, then sent off as soon as he came back, and it’s no wonder he’s not back to his best yet. Sending him to a World Cup prior to him being 100% wouldn’t be good for the giant Geordie. He wouldn’t win any fans over if he’s only playing at 90%, and the entire exercise could be incredibly depressing and demoralizing for a player who has fought back from a depressing and demoralizing year. I want to send a fit and fighting Andy Carroll to the World Cup, and have him come back as an England legend—not as a player who won’t wear the shirt again.

We Can Focus On Transfers

This summer is truly a crucial one for West Ham, and it’ll be good for the club to focus on bringing in some quality new signings, without having to worry about both players getting injured and players being showcased. Hopefully, while all the hustle and bustle of the World Cup is taking place, we can have a good nose around the players who will be wanting an opportunity to play some first team football in England in order to get in their country’s side next time. Talking to you here, Nasri. You’ll look real good playing at West Ham, trust me.

No West Ham players means Kevin Nolan isn’t playing for England

Seriously—let’s just all take a minute and be glad for this. Sure, he’d um, provide a lot of pace up front whilst constantly putting himself in an offside position, but it’s probably a good thing he’s spending his summer working on his fitness.  Both for West Ham and for England.

Considering the above, I’m thoroughly going to enjoy putting my feet up and watching a surprisingly youthful and ambitious England without having any of the worries of last season rain all over my football watching-parade. And, hopefully, while we’re all busy singing for England at the top of our lungs, our players will be happy, uninjured, and our board will be making some good signings while the only over-inflated ego we’ll have to massage this summer is that of Ra’vel Morrison.

Besides, we’ve already won the World Cup for England once. Let’s give some other clubs a chance.
