West Ham fans bannerI’ve dusted off my claret and blue scarf and my ‘I follow Jack Sullivan on twitter’ t-shirt (no, really.) My season ticket has been given a once over with a wet-wipe, and I’m ready to head back to Upton Park. I’m really looking forward to our opening game against Cardiff City – but there are four other fixtures that I am looking forward to even more.

Forever West Ham is now on Google+, so be sure to find us on there by quite simply (and rather unsurprisingly) searching ‘Forever West Ham’

Now I love a good game against the top of the table teams, as we seem to play to the level of our opposition; i.e. we tend to play better against ‘better’ teams. Last year’s FA Cup draw with Manchester United, incredible at home victory over Chelsea, as well as draws with Manchester City and (again) Man Utd at home were great games, and I certainly look forward to those big games again this year. But here’s a look at the other games I’m most looking forward to.

Southampton v West Ham, 15th September 2013

I’ve enjoyed games against Southampton over the past few seasons, as these games tend to be very well matched. Southampton are a team that often catch us a bit off-guard away from home. It’s been a while since we won in Southampton- in 2011-2012 we drew at home and they beat us away, but we improved against them last year, beating them at Upton Park and drawing away. I think this year we’ll be able to beat them home and away, as Andy Carroll should certainly be back by then and will be ready and raring to go.

Swansea City v West Ham, Saturday 26th October and West Ham v Swansea, Saturday 1st February

I think of all the teams in this year’s Premier League, Swansea will provide us with the stiffest competition. Last year they finished above us in 9th – level on points, but with a better goal difference of just four goals. This was largely because of their incredibly prolific goal scoring, courtesy of Michu. Worryingly, with the addition of Wilfried Bony to their strike force, their goal scoring is only going to improve. I’m looking forward to playing them as I think the home and away fixtures with Swansea will be hard fought goal-fests for both sides- and that these two games will have a major impact on where we end up in the table this year.

West Ham v Tottenham Hotspur, Saturday 3rd May 2014

Spurs at home was an epic game last season. Even though we lost at the very bitter end, it was possibly the best game of the season for me because of how well-played it was, and how much of a fight we put up for it. The only reason Spurs won that game was because of the genius of Gareth Bale. At the time of writing he is still a Spurs player, but for how much longer? West Ham v Spurs is always going to be a great game, but if they lose Bale, this is going to be a great game we could easily walk away with.

I also have a fondness for Spurs games played towards the end of the season, as it reminds me of the last day of the season in 2006 – a glorious, sunny, warm day full of poisoned lasagna – which gave everyone a laugh at Spurs’ expense, as well as a 2-1 win. He’s hoping for a bright sunny repeat.

What games are you most looking forward to? Who would you most love to see us beat home and away this year? Let me know below, or tweet me @makingthemarrow

Not really bothered as long as they are good games. Ones l least look forward to are the ones which involve Abuse History is History and best left in the pass. And Millwall would be one i certainly would not look forward to and think twice about going to
