Stewart DowningStewart Downing is set to become the third Liverpool player in under a year to move east and sign for West Ham United following in the footsteps of Andy Carroll and Joey Cole.

The winger, 29, will become Sam Allardyce’s fifth summer signing should he, as expected, pass his medical.

It is widely expected that the former Middlesbrough and Aston Villa man will sign a four year deal at some point today.

Downing who, like his new teammate Carroll, joined Liverpool for a hugely inflated fee and struggled to cope with his large transfer sum.

He was the brunt of many jokes, when he achieved no assists or goals in one season from left wing in a team that possessed such talents as Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard.

Now surplus to requirement following the impressive arrival of Philippe Coutinho, Brendan Rodgers will be happy to part with Downing. I fully expect he will enjoy more success in the East end than he did in Merseyside.

With less pressure on him, he will look to find the form he had during the early stages in his career at Villa and Middlesbrough where he had an impressive record of bagging assists and goals at crucial times.

After his big money move to Liverpool, he was thrust into the limelight and with the expectancy he struggled to find his form and is now set to move to the Hammers in a desperate attempt to rekindle his early career highlights. With his international chances seeming limited he will look to attract the attention of Roy Hodgson ahead of next year’s World Cup with some vital assists and goals.

I have seen rumblings on Twitter of discontent with this deal, he will turn out to be a top signing and I’m sure of it. He has a cracking left foot and on his day he can take a mean set piece something that the Hammers dearly lack.

With 34 England appearances to his name, it clearly shows he has it in his locker here is hoping he finds his twinkle toe dribbling and his wand of a left foot and he starts finding Andy Carroll’s head on a regular basis.

Stewart Downing in a claret and blue shirt will be a sight worth beholding. Can’t wait to see him bombing down the flank whipping in crosses and scoring the odd goal here and there.
One more quality striker and we are seriously in the hunt for Europe and a cup.
Come on your Irons! Saturday can’t come quickly enough…

You have purchased a mule, he will not do any of that. Picking up the wage packet an not much else.

I am an LFC fan, and I rate this guy big time. He will work his socks off, and be a success at WH. He was bought to supply Carroll, that never materialised as Carroll was injured then moved. Unfortunately our front line, Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho, do not need crosses, they need it played to feet, a right winger does not do that. I read a blog from a Manc site, and it is worth noting just what he provides. Would you prefer Nani, Young, Valencias, check this blog out, oh and best of luck this coming season.
