Should West Ham change their transfer focus?

|

James Collins scoring against Manchester UnitedWest Ham United’s sole focus during this summer window has been on attacking options. Even our one defensive recruitment had an attacking motive behind it in full back Razvan Rat. But with just three recognised centre backs should we be looking at defenders as well as the obvious need for striking options.

Day after day my twitter timeline (I know it’s only twitter) is full of potential new signings. Just today (Monday) we’ve been linked with Jermain Defoe and Troy Deeney after yesterday’s disturbing tweet from Jack Sullivan regarding Genk’s Ilombo Mboyo.

Our need to strengthen the front line is naturally at the forefront of Big Sam’s and the boards mind but is this being short sighted on our part?

Allardyce when asked about the defence argued that Joey O’Brien and Guy Demel could cover at centre back should we suffer a crisis of injuries at the heart of defence.

Rumours of former Chelsea centre back Khalid Boulahrouz joining the Hammers show that Allardyce is aware that we may need more than just someone that can do a “job”.

In my opinion we need one more experienced head in defence but only after we agree a deal for a striker or two. We can then look at the top 6 squads and then swoop in using the loan market toward the end of the summer window.

All this comes after West Ham gaffer Sam Allardyce revealed that the club still has a bit of money left to one side for the right player.

He told West Ham TV ahead the pre-season game against Club Sporting; “We do have these funds available and we particularly felt last week that it was going to be two players coming in, but unfortunately both fell by the wayside. The deals are not totally dead, but they’ve not been clinched either, which has left me, the Chairmen and Martyn [Glover, head of player recruitment] extremely frustrated.”

With that in mind I’m sure more “ITK’s” will continue to surface with more rubbish. Here’s hoping for some news on the striker front soon then we can really start to talk about other options.

Come on you Irons!

Tweet me @bowdenwhu with your views do we need a more defenders? Or are Tonks, Ginge, Winston enough? Should we invest in the youth?

We got 3 really good centre backs. Reid n Tompkins are young and technically brilliant, ginge makes the odd mistake but you can’t question his bravery and commitment plus he can score a good header (2 against UTD were exceptional). So maybe 1 more low budget squad CB( bramble anyone?). Keep the funds to add pace up top I say. Give Morrison his chance aswell, he’s earnt it now.

Bramble nooooooo, thinking one more player and all will be fine is dangerous teams below us have strengthened considerably and I’m afraid our fine pre season form may prove a false dawn.Letting Bony and Remy slip by could cost us
