Try watching a West Ham game at 2am with Mido playing

Sam BaldockThere’s nothing like seeing your team score. The exhilaration when the ball hits the net, nestles in the onion bag, rockets into the top corner, or bundles over the line, is almost unparalleled.

Goals are what we as football fans pay our money for. It’s what players get paid the big bucks to create and finish.

And it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, sitting through 90 minutes without your team registering a goal is often a demoralising experience.

So the prospect of another sparse scoring record next season is a dismal prospect, when most of our games here in Sydney will be viewed at the dead of night.

There is a general good feeling around the club at the moment, and we have been scoring goals in our warm up matches.

But when it comes to Premier League defences, we are going to need far more firepower than we have at the moment.

The club has prioritised getting a striker in, so let’s hope ongoing efforts and negotiations pay off.

Goals have long been somewhat of an issue at the club. There have been several spells where we tried to buy them in, once in the form of Ilan, Mido and McCarthy, and more recently in the Championship with Baldock, Vaz Te and Maynard.

None of those six have ever made the grade, and few of us want to see further rushed signings that underachieve while adding little value to the squad.

The positive is that many of the names so far linked are of a proven calibre. But the longer the wait goes on, and the more obscure the apparent targets become, the more unappealing those goalless games at 2am are going to seem.

    24 games, 3 goals and 4 assists.
But he played on the wing (and looked good towards the end of the season) as well as having a bad injury in the middle of the season making him miss about 2 months.
    Give the lad a chance
