Should West Ham Fans Be Worried By Andy Carroll’s Behaviour?

carrollThe Mirror recently published an article and video of West Ham United’s new record signing, partying and living it up on holiday in America. The story went with Carroll drinking heavily, at one point he was dressed as a chipmunk, another shot shows him on the shoulders of a friend. Is this, such a bad thing?  Well I don’t think he has got anything to answer for.

Jimmy Greaves is spot on in the article he wrote about the situation, in that back in the 60’s and 70’s, players were always out having a drink, sometimes before match days.  Even our own Bobby Moore got banned by Ron Greenwood following a drinking session before an FA Cup defeat to Blackpool.  Andy Carroll is only doing what a normal 24 year old man would be doing on his holidays, going out, having fun, and letting his hair down.  So what is all the fuss about?

Footballers are role models to millions of people in the world.  They are celebrities nowadays, with the paparazzi following them around everywhere they go.  I’m sure Andy Carroll is not the only footballer who got drunk on his holidays this summer; however, it seems he was the only one who wasn’t afraid to show that he is only human after all.  He looks like he is having a belting time, and appears it’s in a normal bar, with the average Joe.  Unlike some of these other footballers, who will only go to the trendy bars with all the other celebrities, where members of the public cannot get near them. I understand that some footballers need to be careful these days, but maybe if they spent time with the supporters, then maybe it would reduce the time that the Paps would try to photograph them.

The problems only arise when a player is giving the club a bad reputation.  Frank Lampard and John Terry were caught at an airport, drunk, and behaving badly following the September 11th tragedies in America.  Ryan Giggs had an affair with his brother’s wife, Ashley Cole also cheated on his wife, Cheryl Cole. Liam Ridgewell wiping his backside with £20 notes, Joey Barton and Steve Gerrard have both been accused of assaults, Barton even serving time in prison… this is the sort of behaviour that would bring down the clubs reputation.  But was Carroll behaving badly?  No.  Did he pull some women?  Probably, but if he is a young single man, what else do people expect him to be doing?

For me, it was great to see Andy Carroll having a good time on his holidays, and as long as he isn’t dragging the clubs name through the mud, then there is nothing to worry about.  The booze couldn’t have affected him to much at the medical, as in the words of David Gold – he passed with flying colours!

COME ON YOU IRONS!!

    Agreed!

As far as I’m concerned the Mirror has always been out of step and looking for controversy where there is none to look for.
IF were purchased a priest on the other hand I would be worried, but like MOST young men he’s on holiday having a good time and a laugh. It’s before pre-season having just signed (or about too) a BIG long term deal and generally feeling good about himself….and WHY NOT???

    The Mirror?………… Irrelevant!

He’s a 24 year old man who was on his holidays. Good luck to him if he got a bit pissed and pulled a few birds. Did he break the law? Of course not. I care as much about what he got up to as he’ll care about what I do on my holiday.

Well considering the article was written in the Mirror at the time Carroll was in the news over his prolonged move to West Ham, it wasn’t really surprising and is now old news and forgotten about …………… well it was until you decided to drag it back up again !!

you’ve made it clear you didn’t fancy Carroll at the money quoted (like it’s your dosh) but let it go mate, he’s here and I for one am delighted.

Sorry Johnsey, am I missing something here? Who is your comment aimed at, because if its me, then I’m delighted to see Carroll here!!

If he did that during the season we’d have a big problem they’re given a holiday for that exact reason! If anything makes me like him more, shows he’s really 1 of us!ha

What worries me most is that Titus Bramble is training with us at present!!!!!!

We should be far more worried by Ian Hendon’s comments reported in the Mail today despite what David Gold said on Twitter
“‘I’d say he was good enough for another year in the Premier League,’ Hendon told Sportsmail.
‘The manager will have a look at him and make a decision, he’ll give him every chance to prove himself.’

As long as he don’t do it 1 or 2 days before the match we have no worries, but hopefully it don’t become a recurring picture of him getting smashed in bars every week.

  • Chris says:

Not a problem for me, he may be an icon for millions as other footballers are but he is still a human being, and a 24 year old one at that, take into consideration he is injured as well as being on holiday and I don’t honestly see what the problem is. I wouldnt like to divulge what I was doing at 24 but trust me there is a lot worse he could be doing.

If this was a week before the season starts I’d kick his arse myself, all 5ft 5 of me!

May I also add, if we sign Bramble for a year, it might be a good idea to send him out wrecked as I saw some of his performances last year.

  • ed says:

the only thing we should be worrying about is if he was caught smoking crack on a park bench in hackney.. other than that, i dont blame him for getting absolutely wrecked. he worked his socks off for us last season so he deserves to have a bit of fun

  • Aussie Peter says:

    He hasn’t bitten anyone either
