Is This A Realistic Target For West Ham Next Season?

Academy Of FootballWell with the season now only a couple of months away, West Ham United and Sam Allardyce’s plans are well under way. The signings of Razvan Rat, Adrian, Andy Carroll and Danny Whitehead have already added to a pretty decent squad. So what will be the target for next season?

I think a top ten finish is well within our reach. We did it last season, and I think with some extra additions, the squad will look stronger and fresher. Once we move on some players too, and add some quality, things will look very bright indeed. But what I would really like to see, and it’s up to Sam Allardyce and Neil McDonald to challenge the squad, and that’s to break into the top 8.

We have to look at Swansea City and West Brom, and look to replace them both. I think top 7 is just out of our reach at the moment, with the likes of Everton, Liverpool and Spurs all making improvements over the summer, but 8th place is probably a realistic target, depending on the further improvements we make.

I think we all enjoy a cup run too, so either cup would be nice, maybe targeting the weaker Capital One Cup as a possibility of winning some silverware. However, first and foremost the league takes priority.

Not only do I want to see us finish in the top 8, but other targets need to include an improved away record with points and goals. As much as I understand last season was about survival, I would also like to see a bit more football played, especially in the home games. Games which we drew at home last season, Sunderland, QPR and Newcastle are games we need to turn from draws to wins.

I’m not going to get carried away. There is still a long way to go, but I can’t remember being as optimistic as I am this summer!

Nice piece, another top ten would be a positive finish in my eyes but I agree that the likes of Swansea, West Brom and maybe Everton are there for the taking. The problem I see is that if we are 14th or thereabouts come Christmas the fans will get on Sam’s back. Need patience for once. The long term aims are sky high. Strange being this optimistic but we have a strong squad now and it will only get better. Irons.

Good piece. I think Liverpool are there for the taking as well. Buying cheap young foreign players wont bring them the consistency they lack. Southampton have money to spend (and no debts) so they maybe a dangerous team this season but see no reason to fear West Brom, Everton (if they lose Fellani and Baines) or Liverpool.

Liverpool will l be stronger this year I expect. Aspas is the the one to keep an eye on …small striker who is class.. they got themselves a right bargain there! !

We on the other hand are also a little stronger but I still feel we need a midfield play maker. Also if we get injuries or suspensions to A C who goes up top or will Sam Amaze us with Maiga and Vaz up top in a 2? wishful thinking I guess.

You are right my man! Play 2 up top, top 7 finish is well within grasp. Same old same old tactics, will struggle to make top 10 imo. Injury to AC and Sam’s tactics go to pot haha

Although I am optimistic that we won’t struggle near the bottom next season, I still have some concerns! Firstly we have had to spend a hell of a lot of money just to stand Still! Also, although it could be argued that the squad players we have let go would have been let go anyway in order to progress to the next level, we already suffered last season from a very small squad and I wonder whether we have the money to replace/upgrade those who have left. If the sales are to balance the books then we are in big trouble! For if all we are doing is bringing in inferior class players to drive down wage costs, then we are seriously weakening the squad! We need both class and numbers to not only move onto the next level but to establish ourselves where we are. The trouble is at the end of the day is, we need the OS revenue now to fund a team that is fit to play In the OS when it opens! Boy has Big Sam got a job on his hands! COYI!

“can,t remember being as optimistic as I am this summer” Famous words for all Hammers fans!!! Remember the crash after 1986? or the disaster after Roeder’s 6th place finish? More recently the Pardew collapse. Our hearts reach for the sky but our dreams fade and die!!! OMG I hope not, please please not this time, not again. Maybe the God of football will really smile upon us at long last.

Sorry forgot to say the other huge problem we have is that we need another top striker to play alongside or just behind our Andy. And we are not going to get that while we play with a lone striker. No class striker is going to come to the club to warm the bench and equally West Ham aren’t going to pay serious money for a bench warmer either! So we have a bit of a dilemma! Especially when you consider AC is likely to miss the start of the season through injury! Ideal solution would be to pull out of the hat a striker who can play wide right, whip in crosses to AC, be on the end of the knock downs and score 12-15 goals a season! Oh and be world class and not cost us a bean! Lol. There, sorted! Big Sam you have my number! COYI!

We’ve been linked with Salomon Kalou, who can play on the wing as well as playing off the striker. His wages may be 50 or 60k a week but 2 years ago he was winning the champions league with Chelsea, wouldn’t he be worth the money?

  • Johnsey says:

Good shout with Kalou, we must be realistic with our hopes, we have spent pretty much all our budget on Carroll, rightly so in my opinion, we will obviously be looking at loan players now and keeping a very close eye on the squad lists from the likes of Chelsea to see who is left out of their 25.
