My View On Sam Allardyce

Allardyce SamIt all began last season when Sam Allardyce was announced as the new West Ham United manager. Everyone new his style of play but few were to judge him just yet. It was a long a stressful season with many fans turning against Allardyce. However, his target was to get West Ham back into the Premier League and that’s exactly what he did.

Now lets focus on this season; in the league, where we belong, the Premier League. Its been a very up and down season results wise but we can’t say that Sam Allardyce hasn’t produced. He has made us a very tough side to beat at home. We have played eighteen games at home so far this season and we have only lost four, which have all come against teams in the top seven.

Admittedly our away form has been awful this season with only three wins out of eighteen games. However, recently our away form has picked up with draws against Liverpool and Southampton and we seem to be challenging teams more away from home whilst also creating more chances. But when you look further into this, only twelve teams have more wins away from home than us and nine of those teams are teams that are currently above us, which explains itself really.

What we really have to look at are the targets that the board have set Sam Allardyce. His target was to finish in the top ten and as it stands he is achieving that. I will admit that Allardyce doesn’t play the best of football. He’s not the sort of manager that is going to get his team to have 70% possession throughout a game but what he does do is get results and in football, results are all anyone cares about.

In my opinion, I would be more than happy to see Allardyce sign a new contract at West Ham. He got us promoted last season, one more win would see us secure a top ten finish due to goal difference and I believe that’s a great achievement especially considering its our first season back in the Premier League.

I think it’s been a great season back where we belong should get a deal 3 year deal for me 10th with 2 games left and I think everyone would have taken that at the start if the season.

I think Big Sam is the best thing to happen to our Football Club in years and I hope he gets a new deal for at least 3 years. We are now a proper Football Club again respected and also a little feared…..how often in the past have travelling teams and supporters turned up thinking “West Ham away, well that should be a nice game and another 3 points”……a little hairy on the terraces maybe but not too difficult or physical on the pitch, well thats all changed and thats down to Big Sam….given proper investment in the Summer Big sam will strengthen and improve what is already an ‘adequate’ squad, we will be better and stronger next year and West Ham away will look like the daunting fixture it should have always been and I am sure a real improvement away from home too..
The Olympic Stadium, Big Sam, Gollivan and the West Ham Faithful what a toxic mix to create the next powerhouse in the PL……………….who knows eh

To be honest i would prefer watching SA way of playing football than when we use to play the so called ‘beautiful football’ at ours, i think it is far more entertaining watching a physical game we play play than just passing it around. i really can’t see SA having a second season meltdown like how Pardrew and Zola have had at WH, DEFIANTLY our BEST MANAGER IN YEARS, deserves a 3 year contract IMO.

  • roger says:

its good to see our own passing on positive comments about sa, to be honest i am still a bit unsure about him, but you cant deny that he has achived what he said he would do and we are not on the edge of our seats with sqeaky arse syndrome at this part of the season.i dont belive there is anyone else to lead us into the olympic stadium so maybe its time we get behind him,i do think that in a few years time we are going to be a force. COYI.

Here here! It’s about time everybody finally saw BS for what he is! A bloody good manager! And the only one to lead us to the promised land! (OS).Can’t wait to see who we bring in and just how we develop next season! Haven’t given a thought about relegation OR about second season syndrome! Just thinking about how much we will improve next year! (How many times in the past have West Ham fans bee able to think like this? Going to be a long summer before the new season starts again! ,

  • Terry Gill says:

Ok,lets call a spade a spade, time for brutal honesty.BFS will never make us pretty, and easy on the eye,we’ve been like that in past and it never worked,we’ve produced great players who we sell while we fight relegation every 2 years. Not anymore,Sam has added steel to the hammer, and gone is the rubber,we can build in next 3 years and start going for silverware with good signings,so. get behind him!!

Firstly I would like to give a massive round of applause to Jake Letchford not only for stating what the more sussed among us realise but also for the title of this thread “My View on Sam Allardyce”.

So many people are the authors of biased and badly written threads with headlines which read as if they were established facts, when really they are badly disguised and used purely to have a go at our manager and belittle his understated achievements to date.

I’m so used to reading negative comments by people who don’t seem to have an understanding of where we are at this point in time and the fact that because we as a club haven’t got the money of Chelski, Citeh, Manure or even the spuds, to compete in our first season back wasn’t always going to be pretty. The press and media also use the “West Ham way” as a stick to beat us supporters with as we aren’t meant to upset the favourites or get in the way of the teams at business end of the table. We’re just meant to play pretty football, win some and lose some.

Well I’m glad we have got a bit of backbone now, and I hope Big Sam gets at least a three year contract as I believe that year on year along with getting better players, our team formation and tactics will also improve. With stability will come success and from some of our own a little understanding is needed.

Well said to all of the points that I’ve read so far which has restored my faith in our supporters being amongst the most knowledgeable supporters in the country….. Take a bow!

I was not a fan of BFS before he came. I am pleased with the position he has got us to but before we hail him as the new messiah have a look at what he has done so far.

    1. Got us promoted, albeit via the play-offs.
    2. Kept us up comfortably in 9th-11th probably.

We had the biggest wage bill by a country mile in the Championship, so if we hadn’t have got promoted then he deserved to be sacked.

This season has been the weakest premier league ever in my opinion.
This is backed by the lack of any English team in the latter stages of the Champions League and the fact that Swansea, Wigan and Bradford (from League 2!!!!) all made it to cup finals.

I disagree with the point “in football, results are all anyone cares about”

    I care about being entertained.
I care about producing our own players and giving them a chance.
I care about the future of our club.
    I care about cup competitions.
I care about paying a very average striker £90k a week.
I care about having a captain who is the laziest player I have seen at this club in a very long time.

Sam’s choice of strikers has been abysmal.
Carew, Maiga, Chamakh (never plays), Paulista (ditto), Maguire (ditto), Carroll (is not worth the wages).

His choice of captain makes me despair. we are such a better team without him.

He has ignored a brilliant prospect in Jordan Spence and plays Demel who is so poor.

We have had 6 cup games under Allardyce in two seasons (incl one replay)
    Won against: Crewe (h)
    Drew against: Man Utd (h)
Lost against: Aldershot (h), Wigan (h), Sheffield Wed (a), Man Utd (a)

If you are a realist then you know we are never going to win the PL in the foreseeable future. Therefore a cup final is the best we can hope for.
We are not going to get that under BFS.

I didn’t like him before he came. I still don’t like him.
    Only one reason.
He is too negative. He plays not to lose. He doesn’t play to win.
    Hence his dire cup record.
I want to be entertained. Bring in Paolo!
    And get rid of Nolan!

    • Craig says:

Well said Alan. In my opinion Sam has done a great job but it is time for a manager who is tactically better attack wise, and doesn’t play long ball. Some games we play incredible and long ball is rarely used, but then against Wigan for example we were played off the park and should have lost after losing possesion by long kicking. Carroll is playing well and I’d love him to stay but I’d like to know why Maiga isn’t playing???!! Is he really that terrible?? If a new manager came in Nolan would know his days were numbered too. Some fans are delusional saying how he scores important goals, yet they do not realise we would win the game by more if another player was playing.

    • Ro says:

Paolo? … thanks but no thanks. If we were to change managers i’d want someone with a proven record and higher profile like Benitez maybe. Between Sam and Paolo…Sam all the way… at least for 2-3 more seasons. Paolo may become great in time but i wouldnt want him here right now.

Also, I want to see how the team evolves if BFS is given proper transfer funds. I remember even Bolton starting to mix it up well at times with Djorkaeff, Okocha and the like and Allardyce got them to Europe. Also i seem to remember a few cup semi-finals and i believe they got to the League Cup final in 2004. So i dont think he completely ignores cup runs. He may do so until we have a big enough squad to cope on both fronts and use them to blood some youngsters but we will eventually get there. The truth is Sam never got the funds to build the team he really wanted. I hope that happens at WHU.

Unfortunately I wanted to reply to your post on a factual level but ended up posting my previous post. So here’s a shortened version.
1.Carew…… Remember relegation, losing quality players, financial meltdown and shedding players and wages? Well it was a touch of genius to get in a body that got us points which led to our first time promotion. Tell me how many clubs have achieved that honour out of all the relegations from the premiership?…..Silence? You betcha!
      2. Maiga….. We didin’t beat Man U to his signature and £5-6 million is a gamble in this day and age. Even for £10 – 15 million. First season, some adjust some don’t…those are the breaks.
      3. Chamakh & Paulista are loans and as such we have transfer windows, once shut, they are SHUT. They were bodies and as such some work, some don’t. Its the sea we swim in at the moment. Harry was just as bad if not worse but some people have restricted memories regarding certain managers failures.
      4. For anyone in thier right mind to mention Carroll as a failure is ridiculas in the extreme. He has given the team a focal point and goal THREAT, lifted the players, manager, the club and supporters and possibly secured our premiership survival….. How much is that worth???? You tell me!
      5. Maguire…………..You have got to be having a laugh to mention him! He is a KID, a good “Prospect” who hasn’t played at this level and is still trying to adjust. Give him a break.

But I think it all made sense when you mentioned Paolo for manager!!!
Depth of understanding tells me his shot is some way off and that some of the supporters that call for him, on a day that Sir Alex has announced his retirement have no understanding of the word STABILITY and all that it means!

the only danger with big sam is what happens to us when he leaves. he plays a particular style which requires certain types of players. once he moves on it seems difficult for replacement managers to change the squad and style of play. look at the fate of the other clubs once sam has left.

Exciting time for west ham , a board with passion and know how reducing debt they inherited and driving west ham foward , a decent manager to bring stability and slowly build season after season , a new stadium with excellent training facilities for the academy making it attractive for quality players to come , the news of adidas being our new kit is proof what a attractive package west ham are becoming .
lets face it weve been a yoyo team for a decade , were a massive club with a great history and the most loyal fan base , lets stand united .COYI

  • Bristol Hammer says:

Got to agree very interesting point that if BS leaves that an incoming manager will inheret a team that is only good at playing a certain way but my mate who is a 20 year Bolton fan swears that under BS they got better season after season. My view BS like Pulis at stoke knows he cannot compete money wise and makes the most of the finances he has. It is very exciting moving to the OS even if we don not attract new finance Upton Pk is worth 100 mil. Which would be a real shot in the arm. My guess is that big hitters will come aboard once we move and hopefully we can become great again….Maybe
