West Ham’s Outsider For Hammer Of The Year?

|

Jussi JaaskelainenIt’s fair to say that West Ham’s, Jussi Jaaskelainen has had mixed reviews from the very first day of the season. With fantastic saves, such as the one against West Brom, coupled with feeble efforts in goal and various spillages, Jussi has had an up and down kind of season.

Although, it is the case that he has made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League and certainly helped us win many points in our first season back in the top flight. I do not doubt that a new keeper will be purchased in the close season due to Jaaskelainen being a seasoned 37 year old (will be 38 by the time next season comes around), is coming to the end of a successful career between the sticks.

I don’t mind Jussi, I don’t particularly like him, but after some of his performances this season, there is little reason to dislike him. Frustrating and somewhat worrying are probably the words I’d use for the former Bolton Wanderers man, some goals against us should have been easily saved, and whenever the ball flies towards goal I do get a little worried what with his tendency to spill the ball into the path of the oncoming attackers.

Winston Reid is my personal shout for Hammer of the year, with Joey O’Brien and Mo Diame also in with a decent chance. Jussi is an outside contender due to the magnitude of some of his saves, but if it were down to me, I would see it go to a player that has been solid all season, with Jussi getting recognition due to what he has contributed positively, the negatives just see him ruled out for me.

No way Jussi can get it. He has been good and has made some important saves, but there is no one for me who has been anywhere near Diame’s standard. He carried us through some games and noone has as big an influence on our strength both in defence and mainly going forward as he does. Quality player and he is the only one who can boast about being close to consistently excellent this season

    Hammer of the Year??
James Collins followed by Joey and Winston……

  • Warren says:

No way…. Reid is to me the man who has consistently performed well, Diame has done well & jussi too but nowhere near the level of our kiwi!

Collins for me, this season has proved to me why we got relegated. Best centre half we’ve had since stretch. Jimbo will be getting my vote.

There hasn’t really been one standout performer… Although notable mentions go to Diame, Reid, Obrien, Jussi, Collins, Noble, etc… I would probably go for Reid, generally been consistently solid and has proved himself as a good premier league centre half. Would have been Diame if he didnt go through a quiet spell after the jan transfer window. Most improved player should go to joey obrien. Goal of the season andy Carroll v WBA

Out and out its winston reid..hasnt put a foot wrong all season!! He has been our best and our most consistant player, i bet my house on him getting it!! Who put the ball in the pikeys net? Winston, winston

Winston Reid by a million miles, anyone that saids otherwise will probably of a had a bet on Carlton for the golden boot. Noble 2nd and Diame 3rd

  • Hammerhead says:

It’s between Reid & O’Brien for me. Both have improved so much from playing in the championship. If I’m honest I thought we’d be seeing O’Brien getting skinned every week in the prem but he’s been brilliant.
Same with Reid: I thought we’d see the Reid who went down with us. But he’s been the complete opposite!

Winston all the way, he’s been class all season.

Winston Reid by a mile then noble 2nd probably go for joey O’Brien 3rd

I think it probably has to be Reid but we ALL need to realise that it is a team game and we have had great individual performances from around the whole team as well as top performances from unexpected quarters.

Our first season back has been a success story so far masterminded by Big Sam. But the stand-out surprise and master stroke has been the signing of James Collins. I wasn’t totally sure about his signing for us but he has been one of our linchpins in defence whether with Reid or with Tomkins (against the Pool).

To win any sort of “Player of the year” award the player must show consistency. I cannot honestly say that Jussi has been anything other than “inconsistent”. Some great reflex saves marred with the spilling of simple shots – as well as too much dropping to his knees instead of making every effort to reach a shot he MAY not have been able to reach. In addition his distribution leaves a lot to be desired. Not a candidate for HOTY for me. Winston Reid and Mo Diame are my front-runners

    You mad bro

Jussi probably gets my vote. I’ve seen many more cracking reflex saves than howlers. Every week I say how glad I am that he is there rather Green. Our defence may be pretty solid on occasion but Jussi has been a game-changer/saver on numerous occasions (I think about Spurs at home and Chelsea away as obvious examples despite the end results – he was pummelled with shots on target in both matches). Collins has had a good second half to the season but is still prone to error. Reid and Diame have both been consistently good. I think watching Nolan on return from injury, they way he leads and works hard are also highly commendable – not to mention that he is also our joint top scorer.
