West Ham Need A Talisman

|

Bobby MooreWest Ham United is a club with great traditions, great ambitions and a manager capable of taking us in the right direction. However, although we have a few above average players who are capable of winning us a few games, we lack a player who shines brighter than the rest of the squad and captures the attention from the media and give the fans something to cheer about.

Forever West Ham is now on Google+, so be sure to find us on there by quite simply (and rather unsurprisingly) searching ‘Forever West Ham’

When you look around the Premier League clubs, you can quite easily pinpoint each teams talisman. The likes of Liverpool – Luis Suarez/Steven Gerrard, Tottenham – Gareth Bale, Arsenal – Theo Walcott, Manchester United – Robin Van Persie, Chelsea – Frank Lampard, every team has a player who is on the lips of fans around the world – but not West Ham United.

I have always wondered how and why we have drifted so far from a lot of the Premier League sides in terms of player quality, I literally can’t point the finger at any reason for it. Throughout the history of the club we have had real quality and when I say that I mean players who can win a game single-handedly, not the likes Alessandro Diamanti or Andy Carroll. When I say quality I mean we had the likes of Bobby Moore, Trevor Brooking, Alan Devonshire, Billy Bonds, Paolo Di Canio, Tony Cottee and Carlos Tevez, yet now we seem to be left picking up other teams cast offs and I can’t stand it – No offence Marouane Chamakh.

As a club with ambitions we need to start signing quality or make the most of bringing through the youth we have and prove that we are still the ‘Academy of Football’ and can still produce real talent. I am at the point where I dread transfer windows because I know we just aren’t capable of competing with teams for a talisman and we will either panic buy or have to make do with what we have. Call me over critical, but I am a passionate fan of West Ham United and it’s killing me seeing the likes of Tottenham progressing at such a fast rate and challenging for the Champions League places, considering we was on par with them for so many continuous seasons until the last 3-4 years or so and we now need to take a note out of their book and follow suite as much as it kills me to say it.

I like to think I can remain optimistic about what we have to offer and I hope that someone/anyone just ups their game and proves their worth for the remainder of the season (similar to how Momo Diame started off for us) but we shall see.

The chances of us staying up this season are quite high and I can’t see us throwing our Premier League status out the window (yet) but we do need to reconsider some of our approaches in regards to improving the side in both depth and ability.

With a new season not far over the horizon, I remain hopeful that with a new season comes new talent and a clearance of the deadwood and fringe players. I’m sure that Big Sam can work his magic and grind out some solid deals that will please the fans all we can do right now is wait.

  • Peter Webb says:

we need 4/5 points to keep us up, then I wonder if sam would put in the likes of Potts & Spence, both of these postions have been a problem all season-ok demel as done ok-but no pace which we have lacked. if the younger players work out then keep the likes of linda & demel as squad players, and then invest in a few big money men, we will need at least 2 more up front(if its goodbye to carrol&cole)another ch plus a ball player in mid, still dream on. coyis

  • hook hammer says:

Get rid of Taylor, Pogatetz, Demel, , simply not good enough, end of…! probably O’Neil alsoand not sure Linda will ever regain the 5 yards of pace he never had! and don’t expect to see Diarra back – could be our loss?
Fully expect CC & AC will be gone before August…
Would like to see what Paulista is made of before end of this season so we know who needs to be replaced…

  • I think Demel has been an ‘ok’ squad player and although we could get better his not a bad player. Although the other names mention all need to leave. We need quality it’s as simple as that
