Is This West Ham’s Best Defence?

With the return of the left back George McCartney looming, it appears that we have one part of the team with many options available, as many first team players are currently sidelined through some sort of injury. So, what exactly is our strongest back 4?

At right back, right now I’d have to say Guy Demel, he’s been relatively solid for the large part of this season, and in the final stage I’m sure he can continue his decent form, however, in the very, very near future I’d like to see Jordan Spence take the right back position and make it his own, as I feel he has not only the massive potential, but also the ability to take over now and contribute positively.

Two centre back’s based on form have to be James Collins and the ever dominant Winston Reid. Reid is picking himself at the moment with fantastic, passionate displays of defending, and has even captained the Hammers a couple of times this season. Collins isn’t necessarily my favourite centre back, as he just seems a bit away with the fairies sometimes. However, James Tomkins has been well off the pace this season, coming as a shock after his fantastic season last term. There isn’t much competition for places at centre back right now, so Collins and Reid don’t have much to worry about.

Finally, at left back I would have Joey O’Brien. The natural right back has been in sumptuous form of late, turning in impressive attacking and defensive displays, in a position he isn’t familiar with. Although McCartney is good and offers pace, O’Brien has done nothing to warrant being dropped to the bench, and I hope he continues starting for us this season.
