The Endless Possibilities Of Two Up Top For West Ham

|

Carroll against ArsenalSam Allardyce has had his fair share of criticism this season for one main thing; his passion for negativity. Two up top is something that Hammers fans are used to never seeing now, but that doesn’t mean that it’s forgotten. Even in the dying embers of a game that is in the balance and there for the taking, Allardyce refuses to throw caution to the wind and stick two up front, often opting to replace one striker with another.

There have been games at home this season where It’s been clear that playing two strikers would have had a positive impact and possibly led to a few more points than we have at the moment. Especially taking into account captain Kevin Nolan’s abysmal form, I think, along with many others, that he could have been dropped for at least one game.

Andy Carroll, Modibo Maiga, Carlton Cole, Marouane Chamakh and although it pains me to say it, Ricardo Vaz Te are all recognised strikers within the squad along with new boy Wellington Paulista who has fired 3 in 3 for the Development squad. SIX strikers, yet we use one. Doesn’t quite make sense. To utilise Andy Carroll’s fierce aerial abilities, it would make sense to play him with a partner.

With Carlton Cole or on loan Chamakh we would have sheer power and Cole’s added mobility would frighten many centre back pairings, Nolan himself has said that this season! Maiga or Vaz Te’s pace would complement his power, although I still believe Vaz Te hasn’t got what it takes to play in the top tier. Paulista is an unknown quantity and I have heard different things from different people, but he isn’t quite match fit yet anyway.

Even Nolan could do a job up front, as Big Sam obviously hates the thought of side-lining him. He knows where the net is, as he has shown consistently throughout his career, scoring nearly 100 goals from midfield. Given Andy Carroll’s return and what he can do, playing a supporting striker would see us create many more goalscoring opportunities, waste fewer long balls and hopefully pick up more points. With many possibilities available to Sam, I hope he will at least give it a chance.
