Is Paolo Di Canio A Viable Option?

|

Paolo DI Canio SwindonSo Paolo Di Canio’s love affair with Swindon Town came to an abrupt end…coincidentally Sam Allardyce is out of contract in the summer…So is Di Canio a viable replacement for Big Sam at West Ham?

Are you on Facebook? Excellent, so are we http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

Let’s look at this objectively; Di Canio was a truly great player and a legend at the club and he’s made a very promising start to his managerial career. In his first season in management he secured promotion from League 2 as champions and the style in which it was achieved was very impressive; with Swindon playing some lovely stuff on their way to winning the league.

This season Paolo has managed to pick up where he left off as Swindon currently sit in 6th spot after 31 games. So far so good as far as Di Canio’s managerial career is concerned; but is a season and a half of management in the lower leagues of English football enough in terms of experience to take over at a Premier League club? If Di Canio wasn’t a club legend would a CV of 1 Promotion, stylish football and a defeat in the Johnstone’s paint trophy final be enough to convince you that he’d take West Ham forward?

No doubt Di Canio has proved many of the doubters and the critics wrong as he’s done a truly magnificent job at Swindon; but surely before he’s ready for management at the top level he needs more experience. As I remember the club already have hired an Italian manager with little experience and it didn’t end too well; despite all the lovely footy that was played under Gianfranco Zola.

The next step for Di Canio should be a club where he can continue to develop and learn without being thrown into the unforgiving scrutiny and spotlight that is the Premier League.

Deep down the majority of Hammers want Di Canio as West Ham manager…it’d be one hell of a ride, but surely neither he nor the club are ready for that journey just yet.

Lets be very careful here Hammers fans ! Paulo is an all time legend, of that there is no doubt. What a great romantic notion to see the passionate, fiery Italian back at The Boleyn in charge of his beloved West Ham United. We could expect to see his cavalier, dashing attacking flair transferred to the pitch in the old Hammers reknowned style…Goals a plenty, neat quick incisive passing, intelligent movement and inter-play and shed loads of tricks, pace and excitement……BUT, and I hate to say this, the one thing above anything else that Allardyce has brought to this club of ours is a level of stability and committment that we havent seen for ages, and these are characteristics that any club looking to build and progress must have above all others.

Yes, the obvious, basic and undemanding style of play and lack of excitement is painful at times and genuinely hard to watch. God how I long for a Brooking, Devonshire, Brady, Di Canio, or Joey Cole (younger model) to pull strings in the middle and create, invent and show us some skill…but thats a pipe dream at the moment. What we have is a side moulded in Big Sams image..tough, slow, powerful, committed and, dare I say it, until recently, built to get results rather than entertain. There is no doubt that Allardyce has come in and steadied a sinking ship. First time promotion and middle slot in the Prem (for now !!) is no mean feat and for that we can only be grateful and pleased. The style of play is another issue entirely.

My big worry if we dived in for Di Canio is his legendary temperament…it will make for passionate and exciting times at Upton Park (Olympic Stadium !)of that im sure, but it will also put that vital stability at risk and that is the equation in a nutshell. Would Paulo walk at the first argument with the 2 Davids or fly off the handle at the first sign of a disagreement ??

After too many years of pathetic and second rate management, stewardship and lack of ambition, I feel we are back where we need to be and Allardyce, for all his many faults is a no-nonsense manager who commands respect from his staff and players. Another two years of this should see us established finacially and Prem wise (??) and maybe then would be the time to look further afield with regard to a manager with a philosophy more in tune with the Hammers of Brooking, Devonshire and the like ????? Paulo may just be ready and waiting…. COYI !

You make some great points Spence, the stability of Sam is most def needed for now. Down the line a change in philosophy and a more experienced Di Canio go hand in hand.

I agree pretty much with Spence55, but the thing I can’t understand is the SHORT term memory that many of our supporters exhibit.

Di Canio has many of the characteristics that you DON’T want in a manager and he is always a hair trigger away from crashing and burning. With a little more experience, who knows? But I suspect that the supporters calling for Di Canio may be the slightly younger supporters.
Supporters with a little more experience and knowledge will understand that what this club needs more than most is STABILITY, STABILITY, STABILITY!!!

Big Sam has been here two seasons…… That’s right Just Two Seasons!!! What are these supporters who tweet this nonsense expecting???
    Challenging for the title?
Or maybe competing for a Champions league spot?
Or even, out playing and beating the likes of Citeh?……..
All on our first season back???

Let’s not try to run when we are barely crawling is my take on things. There’s no need to look “beyond” Big Sam until he has finished the job that he has come here to do. Year on year our funds for players will increase and with that the team will be improve. But this season was ALWAYS about being solid and surviving………..it seems many of our finest have forgotten that! Big Sam is a manager of VAST experience & KNOWLEDGE a man capable of laying the foundations that a successful club needs.

Let’s stop this premature talk of Big Sam’s departure and look forward to backing the manager and establishing this Great club once Moore!

With you all the way lads. Sam’s a good manager & we need him to take the Club forward. The success of our beloved WHU lies with him . Can’t see it with Paolo at the moment.
