Time to trust Spence?

|

Jordan Spence is has been in and around the West Ham United team for quite a while now and it looks like he is getting closer to a couple of first team starts; but does he deserve a sustained run in the starting eleven?

Are you on Facebook? Excellent, so are we http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

In recent years Spence has gone out to gain experience, going to Leyton Orient, Scunthorpe United and most recently Bristol City where he made 21 appearances without scoring any goals in two years and being recalled by Avram Grant during his first year there and this year he has made 2 Capital One Cup starts along with 3 substitute appearances in the Premier League, so is it about time that he had a go in the first team?

Jordan Spence has been in the West Ham set up for years and was formerly a centre back and so there is no worrying that he will be a right back who is afraid of putting in a challenge like you get in quite a few players nowadays, along with this you have the attacking prowess which we have seen in the short appearances in the league and Capital One Cup matches this league which is required of the modern day full back. He stands very tall at six foot three and has quite a bit of pace as well as looking very comfortable on the ball, the only thing that I would say goes against him is a lack of experience in the top flight.

Guy Demel has been picking up quite a few injuries lately and James Tomkins has been the man being used at right back, with Joey O’Brien being used in the left back position and there have been a lot of times where Tomkins has looked out of place and a natural right back could be in order for the club so there be a signing for either full back position with Manchester United’s Buttner being looked at which would free O’Brien to play at right back.

Despite the fact that we could be going into the window to get a full back in I would say that we should definitely give Jordan Spence a try in the first team, simply because of the fact that he has played a lot of football in recent years, has been around the first team and has the physical attributes and technical quality to be a great player and I feel that if given a chance he could put in a very good performance.

A combination of Reid, Tomkins and Spence are the backline future at West Ham.

Not Tomkins, no way. The lad is not Prem quality, I hope Newcastle take him off our hands

His defending in his 5 minutes against Norwich was dreadful, what was he doing for their goal, his positioning was awful, leading to a right earful from Reid, can’t see him staying at the club much longer

I agree, he got totally skinned and lined up wrong. He does look quite good going fwd but at 22 years of age I think his time is up. I had high expectations from him years ago bug he seems to have hit a wall.

With respect to Tomkins he has looked poor this year. Distribution has been appalling and his time at Olympics had really hit his confidence and development.

Erm, well considering Spence is a RB and he was brought on to play LW can you really blame him for a bit of slack defending? Looked really good when he’s had his chance this season, rotation between him and Demel would be a good idea.
