Return of the prodigal

|

I can’t speak for all Hammers but I must admit at first I was a little underwhelmed at the prospect of the return of Joe Cole from Liverpool; the high wages he commands, the fee involved to prise him away from the Scousers and the fact he just hasn’t played that much footy over the last 2/3 years were all off-putting factors.

However as details about the deal have trickled out such as: Joey’s taking a wage cut to join us and his transfer from Liverpool will be a free one…it suddenly sounds like a very astute piece of business. We clearly lack creativity, invention and someone who can make something happen out of nothing. We re-signed Yossi Benayoun to be our catalyst; and after his loan spell came to an end with the little Israeli barely featuring, it was clear we needed to go elsewhere for a creative spark.

Joe’s return will be sealed in time for him to feature in our latest FA Cup clash with Manchester United; I’m sure I’m not the only Hammer dreaming of a Thierry Henry moment for Joey; as he stepped off the bench to score the winner for Arsenal on his return against Leeds in last season’s FA cup; it would literally be a footballing fairytale if Joe Cole could do the same.

I personally see Joey playing on the right of our attacking three man midfield; hopefully supplying bullets for the likes of Kevin Nolan, Carlton Cole and Andy Carroll to take aim and fire. Joey’s arrival will also free up Ricardo Vaz Te to play as a central striker; which considering the lack of goals conjured up by Cole and Carroll will give us a fresh option before we even sign another forward.

The return of Joe Cole is a good deal for both parties; we get the creativity we’ve been lacking in spades and Joe gets a familiar stage with which to showcase his talents.

At 31 he still has a lot to offer.

Joe has west ham in his blood, is good in the tackle, creative and has improved his shooting since he left. He was among the best england players in the last world cup and just needs some TLC. I am a very happy man.

Yossi was fantastic before injury. Worked his butt off and created a lot. I’m disappointed he’s going back. Cole was always coming back at some point and I’m glad he has. I just hope being at his own club with the fans behind him will make all the difference. So far he has been a wasted talent.

The day Sam plays someone like Vaz Te as a central striker is the day to worry he has suffered a brain seizure. Not that it isn’t a creative idea. It’s just not a Sam idea.

Joe Cole is a better option than Gary O’Neill, whose contract is up at the end of the season. And after the nonsense Yossi pulled over his injury, I would have driven him back to Stamford Bridge myself. So all in all, a very good bit of business in my opinion.

  • Dicksy Di Canio says:

I don’t think we will see the same dynamic Joe Cole as he was a decade ago but he will still be able to get us out of our seat and drive the team on.
