RUMOUR MILL: Marseille striker worth the risk?

|

Throughout the last summer and the quickly approaching January transfer window West Ham United have been strongly linked with Marseille striker and French international Loic Remy, but would he be a good signing for us?

Loic Remy is a man standing at 6 foot 1 and a half inches tall, blessed with pace and who has scored 27 goals in 68 appearances for Marseille along with 4 goals in 17 games for the French national team, so it is simple to say that he could be a great signing for us; however there would be advantages and disadvantages to buying Remy.

Remy is a player who I feel could fit into our system very well as he is a tall, strong and pacey player who has the ability to put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis which is the main thing that we have been lacking this year so in that sense he would be a very good signing for us.

However costing at least £9 million he would be one of our most expensive signings and doesn’t have any Premier League experience and may find it hard to adapt to life in England, with Modibo Maiga proving that the move over the border can be a tough one for players coming from France but then again Drogba came over from Marseille and is now a Chelsea legend, and I’m sure that if Drogba could do it a man of Remy’s quality could do it as well.

Another thing with the signing of Remy is that I feel that after seeing us name only six substitutes on the weekend, we are in need of some squad players who could offer us strength in depth and if we spend the money on Remy we would need to make sure that we had enough money to strengthen the squad after signing him. If we can afford to both then we should definitely give him a try as £9 million is a great price for someone of his calibre but if it came to it I would rather us sign somebody like Danny Graham who we know can play in England and then strengthen the squad.

The signing of Remy is not without any risks, seeing as he has a lack of experience in leagues like the Premier League but I feel that he has the potential to be a great addition to a West Ham United seeing that as it seems Andy Carroll we be gone sooner rather than later we could be left with very few quality strikers, but we should only get him if we have the money to strengthen the squad as well as sign him as a strong squad is more important than having a quality striker.
