Yossi, Taylor or RVT?

|

We may only be two months into the season, but West Ham fans can be delighted with how things have gone so far. Just one defeat, a bad day at the office at Swansea, and vital wins against the likes of Villa, QPR and Fulham stand the Hammers in good stead going into a tough set of fixtures.

Another thing that must surely be pleasing supporters is the growing impact of Sam Allardyce’s new acquisitions. Matt Jarvis is the winger we have been craving for since Matty Ethertington left and Mo Diame is one of the signings of the season in the Premier League, running the game when he wants to and battling for every ball. Andy Carroll may only have played about 90 minutes, but everyone knows if he stays fit he will be a huge player this season.

Defensively we have had a good start too, conceding just five goals in the league, with three of them coming at Swansea. Some still seem unsure about Jussi and James Collins, with a few nervy moments and individual errors creeping in, but in time I’m sure they will become more consistent and with George McCartney now fully fit and James Tomkins raring to go, a few changes can be made if necessary.

I know it is only October, but I’m sure Sam Allardyce is already looking at January and thinking about improving the already terrific squad. I believe Andy Carroll will stay for the season, Brendan Rodgers said he had no place for him at Liverpool, why would he want to go back? However, one position I would love to see the Hammers improve is the wide area.

Jarvis is a quality winger, one of the first names on the team sheet now I suspect. Stunning delivery, blistering pace, great work ethic, can’t ask for more.

But I’m not convinced with Ricardo Vaz Te or Matty Taylor on the other wing. Vaz Te has scored some crucial goals for West Ham; you can’t deny that, I just feel he goes missing too easily when the Hammers need him most in the Premier League and starts producing silly flicks and giving the ball away. If it wasn’t for Ricardo, West Ham probably wouldn’t be in the top flight, but is that enough now?

Matty Taylor has fantastic delivery, but lacks a bit of pace and the ability to take someone on. With our current formation, pace on the wings is going to vital as we are lacking that in other areas. Yossi Benayoun can be thrown into the mix too but I see him as more of an impact sub rather than a three-games-in-a-week sort of winger, so what could we do?

If we had the money I would go straight out and buy Wilfried Zaha or Thomas Ince in January, but that isn’t really a viable option. We spent our budget (brilliantly) in the summer and so we may have to sell before we buy from now on.

So Vaz Te, Taylor or Benayoun?

All three bring something very different to the side. Vaz Te has a bit of pace, height and an eye for goal, Taylor has pinpoint crossing, set piece quality and can defend well, Benayoun has the silky skills, an eye for a cheeky through ball and a passion for the club.

Perhaps it depends who you are playing against. Taylor would be more suitable against Arsenal as he will get back and help his full back out and be able to find Carroll’s head whenever he plays it forward, so how do we judge this?

You could say West Ham are lucky to have three players fighting for one position, but I’m going to be ‘cup half empty’ negative and say we need someone else to make us the attacking force our squad is capable of.

I’ve just watched the England / Montenegro game. England are a bunch of emrrabassing losers they couldn’t even hold on to a 2-0 lead against a very average East European side. They are going to get well-and-truly stuffed by the first decent side they come up against in Poland/Ukraine next summer. The worst thing about tonight was the form of Walcott. Apart from one cross he was complete and utter shit. What the fuck is he doing in an England or Arsenal team? Isn’t it about time he fucked off to some shit team like Blackburn or Wolves where he belongs? 1 4
