The beginning of the end for Cole?

|

The enigma that is Carlton Cole, appreciated by some, berated by others, Carlton is a player that divides opinion among hammers.

I have stated my opinions on Cole in previous articles. To summarise I admire the way Cole has matured as a person; because the guy is likeable I wish he had a bit more ability.

We must remember although Carlton isn’t a 20 goal a season predator, anyone playing the central striking role in an Allardyce 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 does have a thankless task. The hard work of the central striker provides opportunities for the likes of Kevin Nolan and Ricardo Vaz Te. This has been proven by the impact of Andy Carroll whose towering performances have won West Ham games whilst Carroll hasn’t got on the score sheet.

Cole is not a contender for the wide forward positions so that leaves him behind Andy Carroll in the pecking order for the central striking position. Performances from Modibo Maiga may have seen him overtake Cole.  Allardyce certainly seems to prefer Maiga from the bench.

So is this Cole’s last season? There are so many factors and variables which will determine where Cole’s future lies. The future of Carlton Cole may hinge on the future of Andy Carroll. If Cole is really enjoying himself at West Ham he may well be happy to stay at the club even if Carroll is the main man.

Ultimately Carlton Cole turned down Stoke City and took a wage drop to stay with West Ham after we were relegated, regardless of the guy’s ability we have to support and encourage any player which shows that kind of commitment.

I think Cole see’s West ham as his home and won’t be leaving for a while yet. Cole may have to accept not being first choice but he has the positive attitude you need from a squad player.

Come on you Irons
