The academy of football just keeps on giving

|

West Ham United are widely known for bringing future stars through the Academy, thanks to Tony Carr and his staff, it brings me no surprise to name drop another potential star in the making…Leo Chambers

The young starlet from London has been with the Hammers since 2002, making his way through the development system the club has in place. His position is centre back and like many before him such Rio Ferdinand, James Tomkins, Jordan Spence and so on, his time will come to try and emerge as the next big thing to come out of the Academy.

Talking about the Academy, Chambers had to say, “Knowing that players in the first-team squad have come through the club gives you a great belief in the club and in yourself. They have come through the club, which means that there are opportunities for young players, which is good for us, them and West Ham United.”

During his time playing for the youth team he managed to catch the eye of England coach Kenny Swain who then drafted him into his side. Leo went on to make 3 appearances for the under 16s, before progressing through the age groups getting appearances for both the under 17s and under 18s.

Despite not playing for the first team yet, signs of him braking into the first team are becoming more evident with him being named as an unused sub for the game against Southampton and once again for the match against Wigan Athletic.

By making the team sheet week in, week out it makes me wonder just how good he is, he must be really impressing Big Sam in training and showing something different to keep on getting the nod.

One thing I hope is that he isn’t rushed into the side, I know we all love seeing a young prodigy make an instant impact, such as Dan Potts did at left back, but he will need to be introduced slowly which is why it’s good that he is getting a taste of what its like to be so close to playing for the first team and being named as a sub, as this should motivate him and give him that drive to make it as a player.

He has recently signed his first contract for the club, giving the hint that he is clearly in clubs plans for the future. Chambers said, “I’m extremely delighted to sign my first professional contract with West Ham United, I’ve been working very hard but I believe this is only a beginning”.

I look forward to seeing what he has to offer. COYI!

He is definitely a prospect, but don’t get ahead of yourself. We only have 3 senior centre backs in the squad. And with all 3 playing against Southampton & Wigan, we needed to have cover on the bench.
