Like father like son?

|

With talent ever blooming in the young ranks at the Boleyn Ground, you can’t help but look at the names and think out of the selection, who has what it takes to break into the first team. The name on most fans lips is the young Daniel Potts…so who is he?

Daniel Potts was the “young Hammer of the year” last season and is also the 18 year old son of former West Ham United captain; Steve Potts and just like his father he looks set to have a very impressive time here, after capturing the eye in 2012 during his 4 appearances made, however it is only the start and he will need to be given time.

When you look at players and you see how they respond to living up to their family names, it’s quite interesting to see how big of a name they make for themselves, for example Rio Ferdinand made a huge name throughout his career, yet Anton Ferdinand never quite managed the same heights. It makes me think if Dan Potts can really surpass or reach his father’s level, who managed to spend seventeen years at the club and become the 9th most capped player for the club of all time.

Last season really saw the development of this potential star of the future and not for a second has he failed to impress. Dan is the type of player Hammers fans love, he is committed and passionate for the club and he respects the roots and what’s involved in wearing the claret and blue, all you have to do is look at how fans have taken to Mark Noble over the years and see how much he hasn improved and it’s the same for Pottsy.

What does he have to offer the squad? Firstly, despite his lightweight frame, he has a lot of fight in him, he such a determined player and very much like a terrier at times, he is an intelligent player and often times his tackles very well which is what you hope for a fullback, as they look to cover the flanks and stop the crosses from reaching the lurking forwards of the opposition. Defensively he is sound, however going forward and becoming that extra outlet out wide is an area he needs to work on, I’m not saying his bad at it I am just suggesting when you look at George McCartney and Guy Demel, they have good urgency to get forward as often as possible and this approach is something he should consider adopting as time progresses.

West Ham United fans have great hopes for the young lad and I am one of the many who believe he will reach great heights in his career I just hope it’s with us he does it with, as with the modern day of football money talks and players can be lured away easier than ever before, but with players such as Potts I can’t see him moving for money, he is a footballer and wants to play and I can’t see the two David’s even considering selling this prized asset either, or risk causing an uproar in the stands.

I hope Big Sam considers playing him a lot this season and really start pushing for a starting 11 place and push George McCartney to work even harder to keep his place. It’s very exciting times for the Hammers in terms of young prospects coming through, with the likes of George Moncur, Jordan Spence and Robert Hall, all very much on the fringes.

This could be a big year Potts and a couple of others…COYI!
