New boys set to start on Saturday?

After West Ham’s solid, if unspectacular, win over Aston Villa at the weekend and this was despite our two marquee signings Modibo Maiga and Alou Diarra being deemed, not yet match fit.

I have heard this before with West Ham, admittedly Carlos Tevez was a few stone heavier than he should have been but we must have been the only club in the world who thought that Haydon Mullins was a better alternative than Javier Mascherano.

To me a guy who played in the European Championships in June, has 44 France caps and captained them on a number of occasions would not have been overawed by the prospect of Aston Villa at home and Swansea away for his first 2 games.

Modibo Maiga may take a little longer to settle in but I was impressed with Saturdays little cameo.

There is an old saying in football “you don’t change a winning team” but im afraid I don’t buy into this as “you can always improve a winning side”

We already know that West Ham are going to play 4-5-1 this year and Kevin Nolan will certainly be one of the central midfielders and after Mohamed’s Diame’s impressive showing it will be either Diarra or Mark Noble for the final slot.

Its more than likely that Diarra and Maiga will get their first starts on Tuesday versus Crewe and with the quality they seem to possess he will have a problem when selecting the side against Fulham the following week
