We are the best club in the world. FACT (sort0f). Kat Alder lists her favourite things about being a Happy Hammer.
1. The fans – presumably you’re a fan of the Hammers if you’re reading this, and the first mention on the list definitely goes to you. What other team are going to fill out the away stand at Doncaster? What other fans would put up with such gems as Titi Camara? (Remember him?!) We put up with a lot and have learnt to accept disappointment early on! The club wouldn’t be the same without the fans we’ve got – definitely a cut above the rest. Although I would say that…
2. I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles – This song is repeatedly voted in the top few football anthems, and for good reason! When the song cuts out at Upton Park and it’s just left to the fans to sing, it always gives me goosebumps, and doesn’t the song describe West Ham perfectly? It wouldn’t be right if our song was about winning all the time or happiness…
3. The History – We all know it. Our boys won the World Cup, without Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, England wouldn’t have lifted the trophy. We’ve had greats like Trevor Brooking, Paulo Di Canio, Billy Bonds, Julian Dicks and Tony Cottee in the past, as well as the legend that is Christian Dailly. Ha, got you there!
4. The Academy of Football – How many future England players have started their careers at West Ham? Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, John Terry… just to name a few! Our Academy has got an amazing reputation and it’s great to see young stars pulling on a claret and blue shirt for the first time.
5. The Rollercoaster – Who would want to be a Manchester United fan eh? Oh look, we’ve won again. Oh, there’s another cup for us… BORING. West Ham bring drama season after season, and even though it may seem heart wrenching at the time, it definitely doesn’t attract glory supporters or armchair fans! Not knowing where we’ll be playing football season after season is actually quite exciting when you think about it…
