Is he Premier League quality?

|

When West Ham fans were promised the signing of a ‘star of the World Cup’ back in August 2010, fans were fantastically underwhelmed by the acquisition of New Zealand international centre half Winston Reid.

His debut came on the opening day of the 2010/11 season in the 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa as the whole team failed to impress. The rest of the campaign for West Ham was an ultimate failure, and it was not much better for Reid.

Numerous mistakes and unsteady feet limited his opportunities in the first team and when Sam Allardyce brought in Abdoulaye Faye for the 2011/12 season, it seemed Reid’s West Ham career may be over before it had truly begun.

Big Sam gave him his chance however and he duly obliged to shine, putting in strong performances alongside James Tomkins, the partnership that triumphed at Wembley, and scored a cracking volley against Millw*ll to become a cult favourite.

Reid has now proven himself as a dependable centre back in the Championship, but it remains to be seen whether he can make the jump to Premier League. For his performances in the promotion winning year, he certainly should be given a chance.

In the closing months of the season, Reid was one of the star performers along with the likes of Ricardo Vaz Te and Jack Collison to up their game when it mattered the most. If he carries this form into the new season, there is no reason why he cannot hack it at the top.

This of course depends if Allardyce deems him fit to go toe to toe with Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney. If not, a new centre back will be brought in and Reid will see his appearances restricted to the Capital One Cup matches, a fate he does not deserve.

It’s a tough one to call, his 1st and only season in the premier league was less than successful, as was the rest of the team that fateful season, I feel his confidence has grown and was pretty decent for us last year, I feel we will need another centre back regardless, here’s hoping he starts well and keeps the form from last season into the upcoming campaign,

I have full faith that he will be good in the Premier League – him and Tomkins have developed a real partnership and you can tell they have confidence in eachother.

Think he has improved into strong and confident CB and him and Tomlinson could potentially be a pairing for the next decade
