FIVE Potential Wembley Heroes

|

1- Ricardo Vaz Te- The Portuguese maestro has been a masterstroke January sign ever since his influential impact in the 4-1 win away at Bloomfield Road, where he simply toyed and danced around the Tangerines defence, despite belonging to a 10 man team! His goals in March and April in reality kept our fading automatic hopes going until the final day. His unpredictable dribbling sets defences into panic and tempts them into making fouls. When in need of a goal or a piece of flair to liven the team’s attacking ideas up, he is no doubt the man that needs to be on the pitch at Wembley for as long as possible.

2- Carlton Cole- The big striker has certainly had a mixed season at the lowest level he has played for in his professional career. The first half of the season saw large inconsistency from the once England international, with only impressive performances to be remembered from the big man at Nottingham Forest, in the home game against Portsmouth and away to Birmingham. It was until April for Carlton to find any real form, with important contributions from the ex Chelsea youth product at home to Birmingham, away at Leicester, home to Hull and workmanlike shifts in both playoff games. In the Wembley fixture, his role will be to keep both Blackpool centre back on their toes, rough them up (as Sam used to tell Kevin Davies to) and to get himself on the end of all crosses and balls into the box.

3- James Tomkins- The Basildon’s born centre back signing of a new contract in January was one of the best pieces of news all season off the pitch! It’s has arguably been his best season in the first team, maturing so much so that Champions League chasing Newcastle tempted Sullivan and Gold with a big money offer in the January window. Thank goodness the two resisted. Tomkins will have to keep a close eye on goal poaching Gary Taylor Fletcher and the quick movement of Matt Phillips and Tom Ince from midfield. A top professional performance from Tonka at the back to keep the Tangerines at bay should in reality be enough to see us through.

4- Kevin Nolan- The captain’s performances this season have certainly been met with a mixed reception from various quarters of Upton Park this season. Fans have spoken at many home games out about their displeasure for his work rate off the ball and haggling of referees and officials particularly when you consider this was Newcastle United’s captain last season. However, facts and figures do not lie, with an impressive 12 goal tally to show his worth. Furthermore, one can’t help get the feeling that Sam sticks with his trusted captain for the reason he tends to rise to the occasion in big games (bar the Millwall sending off). With important goals this season in games against Derby, Cardiff away in March, both the drubbings of Barnsley and Brighton and the 2nd playoff leg. The big man in midfield has Premier League experience and has a fantastic instinct for goal in the box. A real contender to score at Wembley.

5- Jack Collision- Whether the in-form Welshman makes it to Wembley or not could well be pivotal for the Hammers. Jack hasn’t had his best season to date since coming through the Academy ranks but since the Leicester City game, has hit form at just the right time! He adds creativity similar to that of Vaz Te; creative dribbling, an eye for a through ball and not afraid to take a swipe at goal from outside the box!
