Worth a punt?

Tony Cottee has said that West Ham should sign up free agent Michael Owen without a second thought, but I’m not completely convinced.

Sure, when he was younger he was a massive talent and everyone saw massive things for his career, but I don’t think he’s the type of player we should be targeting.

Owen can score goals and has become a bit of a super-sub, there’s no denying that. But I think we should give Nicky Maynard a chance in the Premier League and see if he can establish himself as a pacey goal-scorer at the highest level rather than go with another player seems to have lost his sparkle – look at how John Carew turned out!

The only way I would want to see Owen at Upton Park would be on a pay-per-play basis, as we all know about his fitness issues, and I think a set weekly wage could well turn out to be a waste of money.

He seemed to score a lot of goals when visiting Upton Park in previous seasons, so who knows what could happen if he plays there every other week!

Overall though, I just really don’t think signing Owen is a brilliant idea. I don’t like some of the decisions he made at Newcastle United, and the fact that he was happy to warm the bench at Manchester United makes me think his love for the game has lessened and he’s more about the money.

I think his passion for the game has decreased, and I would want a player with a bit more enthusiasm to don the shirt in our bid to make a success of our return season in the Premier League.

I think that on a pay per play basis he could be a worthwile investment, but not on a regular contract earning mega bucks for just sitting on the bench most of the time as he would never be a regular starter.

Leave him to his horses and as you say give Maynard a run, he is fast and knows how to score. I think he is definitely one who could make the step up.
