Is Sam the Man for the long term?

|

When Sam Allardyce arrived at Upton Park last summer I don’t think any Hammer was overjoyed by the appointed, but I said at the time, ‘it may not be pretty but he will get us up and keep us there!’

At times is hasn’t been pretty, but at times it has, but most importantly we still have the chance to go up.

Saturday could be an amazing day at Wembley as 38,000+ Hammers embark on a trip across town, but I want to cautiously look into the future, beyond the weekend.

Having gained promotion via the play offs last time we were in this division, Alan Pardew’s side went on to impress in the top flight gaining a top half finish and an FA Cup final appearance which resulted in European football coming backto Upton Park.

Now, I am not saying that Allardyce and his team will repeat what Bobby Zamora, Hayden Mullins and Anton Ferdinand achieved back then, but I would certainly be optimisticof survival if West Ham were a Premier League team come Saturday evening.

Having a decent sized budget and some experienced Premier League players, who may have taken a while to adapt to the Championship this time out, is a huge positive. As a club, I think West Ham revel in being the underdog. Causing shocks at places like Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge is what we live for. When the pressure level is loosened, the fans and players seem to come together and succeed.

As for Allardyce, his record in the division speaks for itself. Look at where Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers have fallen to since he left them? Adding a fewplayers to our current crop of talent, I would definitely say that I would be more excited than nervous going into to a possible Premier League campaign come August.

Of course,it is very presumptuous to be writing about this, seeing as Wembley is just around the corner, but I am a confident person and feel that under Big Sam, the club really can return to nosebleed territory of mid-table Premier League finishes.

The undoubted backing of home-grown owners and the spirit, passion and more importantly quality of the current squad; that also involves home-grown talent; is the spine for a solid future at Upton Park.

Yes a few players may not be good enough, but I have a positive feeling that this seasons Championship tour may be our last for a good few years. Our core is far superior to promoted Southampton and Reading in my opinion and looking at clubs like QPR, Wigan, Aston Villa who have looked dreadful at times and a possible second season syndrome of Norwich and Swansea kicking in, we can compete and beat those sides.

I am confident and hope you are too. See you at Wembley! COYI

Please, please, please. Let’s get up first before we start talking about what we are going to do in the Premiership next year.
It just gives other teams the chance to call us ‘arrogant’ as is already happening.

    Couldn’t agree more.

I feel that if we go up, we’ll stay up so long as Big Sam is here.

Give him time. I loved that Bolton side that had Okacha et al. They played decent football I thought, and got right under the skin of Wenger and all. I would love it to be West Ham upsetting the big boys.

But let’s get promoted first ay?!
