Man United mentality, West Ham wealth

|

Over the last two weeks my Twitter feed has been inundated with angry and, at times, negative West Ham fans. It seems Social Media has acted as a catalyst for negative thoughts and opinions to spread like wild fire amongst a generally ‘never say die’ crowd base.

My guilty pleasure is to engage and at times dissuade opinion away from the anti and in favour of West Ham, however, to no avail. Besides Big Sam (blog to follow following his recent comments), the issue seems to be;

Looking for experience? Just want to be heard outside of the Boleyn? We are currently looking for writers, drop us an email at foreverwestham@snack-media.com for more details

The Stadio Olympico (sounds more glamorous) – Never in my lifetime has a subject been so heatedly debated than the potential move from our beloved Boleyn and quite rightly so. Look West Ham up in the football dictionary (if one exsisted) and you would see the word ‘tradition’ in bold capital letters. The very essence of our historic club can be smelt all the way to the Iron Works and beyond.

The negatives on Twitter seem to have spread far and wide, in extinguishable to most. ‘We will lose our tradition and history’ seems to crop up repeatedly but I ask the question “ Surely ‘tradition’ is etched in the mind forever and passed on from father to son by word of mouth?’ surely tradition can be found at the football museum or in the record books?

Part of being a fan is to support your team and ultimately help them grow. Yes the Boleyn will always have a warm space in our hearts but like a protective mother, it’s time to let our club spread its wings! The facts are clear for anyone (and this is aimed at those who have the ability to ingest an opposing argument);

We won’t be able to fill it, we can’t fill the Boleyn now’ – Moving Stadium will open the club up to vastly improved rail links. Surveys show that West Ham are the 7th most supported club in England. Not only will travel improve from nationwide, but we will also lower the ticket price to entice more people into the ground.

Ever dreamt about getting paid for reading about West Ham? Well now you can make dreams a reality http://bit.ly/ffc-foreverwestham

The running track will ruin the atmosphere’ – David Gold has clearly stated that there is NO BID without retractable seating. He has also promised that the distance from stand to pitch will be no more than that at the new Wembley.

We want proper fans not part timers’ – Ask Arsenal, Manchester United or City how they feel now they have increased capacity? What West Ham has over most UK based clubs is the infectious love one feels upon watching for the very first time. Many a man has tried and failed to impartially watch the claret and blue from the stands, we have the best fans in the world for a reason. If you suggest a dead atmosphere you have lost faith in yourself and quite possible humanity.

While we discuss City, it is notable to mention that their move came BEFORE the lucrative takeover by Mr Mansour. He could see a sleeping giant with top notch facilities and a fantastic revenue potential. In his own words ‘There was team more suited for investment’. If Mr Gold and Sullivan are true to their word than they are gearing the club up for a bright future and ultimately,our very own Mr Mansour.

The Twitter consensus as quite aptly put by a fellow Hammer, is that of a Man United mentality with West Ham wealth. It appears we, as fans, have encroached our station and believe us something bigger than we are? 1980 seems a LONG time ago, we’ve been relegated more than we’ve won in recent years and to put things into perspective; we still hold on to the famous World Cup win like it was yesterday. Is this not the West Ham Way? Is it not for the very turmoil and sorrow we face as football fans the very reason we return as fans?

Sadomasochism at its very truest… The life of a Hammer.

No club has the right to say ‘we shouldn’t be here’, we are a Championship club because we played Championship level football and were punished. So when next on Twitter tweeting, or Facebook Facebooking remember the very essence of what it is to be a West Ham fan, allow your club to spread its wings and put some trust in the two owners who place themselves amongst you or I, as fans. The role of a fan is to get behind your team and sing your heart out, all together now… FORTUNES ALWAYS HIDING

    Nice positive article. I reserve judgement on the move to the OS until I see the clubs plans – and that’s only if WHU are chosen as the preferred bidder!

    I also think the club has huge potential with it’s existing fan base & potential new fans being the only major club in East London with a huge catchment area. BUT, what’s your source for these ‘surveys show that West Ham are the 7th most supported club in England’?

    3 points tomorrow please. Promotion is the priority rich now!

    Even if WHU are chosen as the anchor concessionaire, can you really see that cockerel sucker Barry Hearn letting it lie? Of course he won’t! He’ll drag the whole process back into court, and we as fans will not know if the plug will be pulled on us again before 2014, probably after Upton Park has been sold and redeveloped as low cost housing. Hearn doesn’t want the stadium himself, but until his threats can be dealt with then I cannot support the Olympic Stadium move.

    Go for it and let the no brainers stay where there at
