Can we take it to the final day?

|

I know we should all now start embracing the idea of the Play-Offs and look forward to a semi-final at a packed Upton Park; under the lights with an atmosphere to shake London town to its very core.

But the notion of the Play-Off’s scares me so very much! It really is all or nothing, do or die, promotion…or another season at this level with a far weaker squad; thanks to inevitable sales to balance the books.

So bearing all this in mind can we spare ourselves the roller-coaster and possibly still nick 2nd spot? Tonight Southampton play Reading in what will surely be a title decider; now it goes

without saying all of the Claret and Blue persuasion will be hoping for a Saints win coupled with us finally at long last ending the home hoodoo against Brighton; to leave the gap at 3 points with a similar goal difference to Reading with just 3 to go.

Reading would then have the relatively straight forward home games against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace; you’d have to accept that in all likelihood the Royals would see off these poor sides. Whereas we have Bristol City and Leicester City both away…considering our away form this season has been excellent I’d like to believe we would win both games, but of course nothing is a certainty in football.

If these sets of results were to pan out a 3 point gap would be the difference heading into the final day games…Reading facing a tricky opponent in Birmingham City away and West Ham

with a rather more straight forward fixture against the men of Hull City at the Boleyn. A win for the Irons coupled with a defeat for Reading at St Andrews could see us finish 2nd on goal difference with both sides level on 88 points.

It’s all ifs and buts unfortunately and the likely-hood is a Play-Off battle to regain our place amongst the elite, but the old adage of ‘anything can happen in football’ has to light our darkening dreams of automatic promotion.

    Saints 3-1 Reading

    Oh well!

No point being scared, play offs here we come. It might not be that bad. Draw our home fixture, win the away tie and the final’s an away day! We can do that. We are West Ham, we play in the air/on the floor!!

Momentum will be important, so a good performance and hopefully result against Brighton would be good.

    COYI!!!
