FIVE games that cost West Ham dearly

|

7th August: West Ham 0-1 Cardiff- Sam Allardyce got off to the worst start possible in the first game of the season. Despite West Ham fielding a strong midfield Kevin Nolan, Scott Parker, Freddie Sears and Matty Taylor and dominating the game for long periods, West Ham could not find that crucial goal to put them ahead. The story for the rest of the season’s home games was to be mapped out as the Hammers squandered chance after chance and typically Kenny Miller popped up in the 91st minute to ensure the Welsh club took all 3 points home and left Big Sam with plenty to ponder after his first game at West Ham United.

3rd December: West Ham 1-2 Burnley- After a fantastic run of form throughout November that involved away wins at Hull, Coventry and Middlesbrough, the Hammers missed the chance to go top of the Championship table with this loss at home to Eddie Howe’s boys. With Southampton losing at Doncaster and Kevin Nolan having put the Hammers ahead on 52 minutes through a delicious lob, it all looked to be going to plan.

However, Big Sam’s men paid the price for woeful finishing to end the game with Nolan, Jack Collision and Piquionne all missing great chances. The defence went onto to become sloppy and allowed Chris McCann to head home from close range only 5 minutes after Nolan’s opener. The game’s proceedings went from frustrating to a disaster when Sam Vokes found himself unmarked and headed in to the net from a corner. A very poor result to end our most impressive run of the season!

9th December: Reading 3-0 West Ham- Despite the possibility of going joint top with a victory at the Madjeski Stadium, West Ham never got into their stride in this scrappy game where the mid-table side (at the time) dominated Big Sam’s boys with Noel Hunt, Jimmy Kebe and Karacan going close. Joey O’Brien went onto get sent off after two yellow cards with Reading converting through Alex Pearce to put the Berkshire club ahead. They continued their dominance afterwards through Simon Church to put them 2-0 with West Ham beginning to look sorry for themselves, bringing back horrible memories of their 6-0 demolition in January 2007. The nightmare continued when Collison needlessly hacked Jimmy Kebe down to ensure himself an early bath, with another goal the result through Simon Church again with a header from the free kick. A terrible day that shaped the remainder of Reading’s season.

7th March: West Ham 1-1 Watford- After a very good month of results in February and a great away win at Cardiff, a home game that many fans may have taken as a given 3 points turned into a very average, anti-climactic home performance where we were lucky to escape from a point.

The Hammers struggled to open up the Hornets defence during the majority of the game and fans worries turned into nightmares when teenager Sean Murray found some space on edge of the area to rifle a shot home on 68 minutes. The fans certainly voiced their displeasure at the poor attacking shows with Carlton Cole and Nicky Maynard being anonymous throughout. Thankfully, to save the East Londoners blushes on 87 minutes, from a corner substitute Ricardo Vaz Te managed to poke a shot through the defence that somehow managed to creep over the line to put West Ham on level terms.

Despite sufficient added time at the end, West Ham’s cluelessness upfront never looked like turning 1 point into 3 as Big Sam excused his players in the media interview afterwards, blaming his side’s performance on tiredness after the Cardiff City game…

20th March: West Ham 1-1 Middlesbrough- West Ham were once again booed off as another home game resulted in dropped points to match the draws earlier in the month to Watford and Doncaster.

West Ham had the better of play throughout but lacked any real cutting edge from the front line as direct play to Carlton Cole and Nicky Maynard proved very frustrating for home fans willing their team onto produce goals.

Finally, the Hammers got a reward on 67 minutes when Abdoulaye Faye’s looped off Joe Bennett to leave keeper Jason Steele wrong-footed.

However, nerves seemed to get the better of the Hammer’s as possession could not be kept by the home side, resulting in Bart Ogbeche firing in an angled effort to draw the Teesiders level on 84 minutes, meaning Big Sam’s boys lost yet more ground on top 2 Southampton and Reading as a result of another home draw.

Its been the same for a while, we dont have a quality striker, someone who can score 15-20 goals a season. Unfortunately Cole just isnt up to the job and we really havent seen enough of Maynard and Baldock. Vaz Te has come good and as such should be our main striker. Lets hope we can attract a goal machine for next season should we go up, if not we still need to offload the players that just arent doing there job.
