The Blame Game

|

So after we brushed aside Cardiff in their backyard at the start of the month everything was teed up for as Sam was describing it a ‘nine point week’ surely the men of Watford and Doncaster would be mere fodder as we marched our way to the top of the Championship.

Of course what subsequently happened defied belief as we succumbed to pathetic home draws and the nine point week we all assumed was in the bag quickly unravelled to a meek five.

So who’s to blame? The fans for creating a harmful and at times hostile atmosphere in which our players find it difficult win? Or is the players and manager who need to buck their ideas up?

Well to be honest it’s a bit of both; the fans are going to understandably get frustrated and agitated when we see our team who’ve been put together for a lot of money by Championship standards flagging against opposition put together for a fraction of the cost.

Such agitation and frustration is not exactly going to be conducive to a positive atmosphere; but in my humble opinion the players must take equal responsibility. We plain and simply shouldn’t be drawing at home against Watford and Doncaster Rovers; the Crystal Palace result wasn’t too bad given the heroics a few days before at Blackpool but seriously; the two draws last week were unacceptable.

I think the players need to man up a bit; I get the atmosphere at the Boleyn can be counter-productive to say the least at times but surely that’s not the reason we’re failing at home. The players are under huge pressure to get us up this season, from the fans and owners; this is our one shot, thanks to new financial regulations within the Football League coupled with certain players only prepared to play in the Championship for a solitary season; we all realise this is our best chance of a return to where we need to be.

With that knowledge comes a great deal of pressure; but this was always going to be case with West Ham in the Championship; last 10 or so games with promotion within grasp so it’s no good using that as an excuse now, the players should be embracing this pressure not fearing it. Would our players rather play for Derby or Burnley? Marooned in mid-table and just meandering along to till the end of the season?

Didn’t think so.
