Can Parker be labelled an all time great?

|

Over the years at Upton Park we’ve been treated to some great talents. The likes of Paolo Di Canio, Julian Dicks, Billy Bonds and Trevor Brooking were all outstanding in the claret and blue, and that’s before we even mention the World Cup winners.

There’s been far too many to list them all,but sadly at the moment we seem to lack an outstanding individual. Our most recent talisman was Scott Parker, so how does he fair against those mentioned and many other Hammers heroes?

Firstly, it doesn’t help that he’s moved to Tottenham Hotspurs. If he goes onto achieve success there, and stays there for the rest of his career then it will be difficult to class him as a West Ham legend because unfortunately he will mainly be remembered as a Spurs player. But that hasn’t happened yet.

At the moment I find it irritating that people say he has already become a better player at Spurs then he was at us. For me, he has adapted his game to suit their team and is certainly a key part of their success, but at us he had to do so much more due to the lack of quality around him.

Whilst always being the one to break up the play and cut off opponents attacks, he was also the one making driving runs forward, producing cutting-edge passes and even scoring top-class goals, all against the same level of opponents he faces for Spurs. I find it amazing tha the was left out of the World cup squad (whilst not fully-fit Gareth Barry was on the plane!), yet suddenly when he moved to Spurs he became the first name on the England team sheet.

So, back to the original point is he an all time great? Personally, I think he is certainly one of if not the best West Ham player of recent times – post Carlos Tevez. You could always guarantee a performance from him, and he did the things we as fans love to see. He ran himself into the ground for ninetyminutes every week, was never shy of going into a big tackle and had greatcomposure on the ball. He was also capable of something special every now and then.

Okay so he’s gone to Spurs, but can we really blame him? He did everything he could to keep us in the Premier League with very little help from anyone else and quite frankly he deserves to be a Premier League player and he deserves his place in the England team. It’s just a shame it had to be Spurs.

I will always respect him and wish him every success (more so for England then Spurs) and I think that whilst he may not achieve the status reached by Moore, Brooking or Di Canio, he should at least go down as by far the best of a pretty bad era.

May not achieve the status reached by Moore? Oh, so there’s still an outside chance that he could do it then, as could Kevin Nolan?

I find it REALLY hard to understand why anyone thinks Parker to be a West Ham great. He was just a journeyman footballer who came to West Ham in a very unhappy state, had love and adulation POURED nto him by the club’s loyal fans until his career was back on track and then DESERTED those same fans when they needed him most … for TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR.

The less said about Super-Scotty-Parker now the better. I wouldn’t want him back at West Ham as a gift.

    Simply….NO!

No Question as Three Times Hammer of the Year.

    Look at the list:

    Bobby Moore 4
    Geoff Hurst 3
    Billy Bonds 4
    Sir Tev 5 (Most)
    Alvin Martin 3
    Julian Dicks 4
    Scott Parker 3

Other West Ham Greats 1 Hammer of the Year awards.

    Ray Stewart
    Frank Mac
    Frank Lampard Senior (0)
    Carlito T
    Martin Peters World Cup winner
    Alan Dev
    Phil Parkes

And there is a lot more with 1 or none.

    The stats say YES.

West Ham Legend – Scott Parker.

Good player but not a WHU legend.
I would ake Pike and Parris over Parker any day.

  • Carl says:

No different to the Judas c*ck wearing vermin that is DeFoe. As far as I am concerned whatever SP did for WHU should have been erased from the record books the day he decided to sign for the filth that is THFC, the saggy faced c*nt of a manager and the even bigger c*nt of a chairman …

  • Justin says:

He looked very good in three seasons where we were basically bereft of any good players. His contribution must be seen in that light. Good player for West Ham. Legend? No.

  • Boo Hammer says:

Sorry to be angry now, but the person who is arguing that Parker is a WHU legend based upon HotY awards has really pulled my chain! As far as I’m concerned there should have been no HotY last season. It’s like paying bankers huge bonuses for bleeding the public purse dry through their incompetence. THE TEAM WERE RELEGATED, AFTER WHICH PARKER PLAYED A COUPLE OF GAMES LIKE HE COULDN’T GIVE A SH*T FOR WEST HAM, BECAUSE HE SO WANTED TO JOIN TOTTENHAM.

West Ham legend status for Parker is a joke.

  • WaitingForTheTide says:

He’s an all-time great in my eyes. He gave his all for us and owes the club nothing. If the club hadn’t have been disintegrating around him I have no doubt that he would have happily stayed with us. He slowly became the victim of a club failing to achieve what it should, and not though lack of effort on his part.

This is an excellent Best West Ham Player vote:

Parker is currently 29th, which I think undervalues how well he played for us.
