Opinion from the stands

The perils of being a female football fan

|

Hi, me again. Another rant I’m afraid. I’m sick of not being taken seriously as a football fan just because of my gender. Just because I’m a woman, it doesn’t mean all I do is eye up the men (Well, apart from Tomkins, as I’m sure you found out in my last article).

I just want to go to a pub to watch the game or be able to say I support West Ham, without some derogatory comment about me knowing nothing. And no, I DON’T need the salt and pepper to explain the offside rule. I am perfectly capable of having an opinion on the game!

Do any other women have this problem? I must say that outlets like Twitter have helped me have decent conversations with Hammers fans and some other general football fans, but I just wish that women football fans were a bit more accepted.

An example of what I’m ranting about is, last night some guy tried to shout me down when I called West Ham ‘The Academy of Football’ – he said Southampton should take that crown. Er, no mate. And then he said that I probably only said I liked football to impress boys anyway. Seeing as my boyfriend hates football, I don’t think that that’s the case, do you? Anyway, he clearly knew nothing as he said that West Ham weren’t even title contenders. Idiot.

I don’t think this issue will change too soon, but until then I’m happy to prove the stereotype wrong. I hope my articles on here have proved that I know a bit about the mighty Hammers!

Rant. Over. Sorry, promise to be more positive next time!

I hope that photo of Karen Brady is to illustrate a woman who really does know nothing about football and why so many men think the way they do. How can someone so connected with the game religiously flout her naive and clueless opinions constantly in the press and get away with it? She’s a constant cause of shame to us West Ham fans, even Gold and Sullivan have now matured enough as owners to know to keep their opinions to themselves. Oh the shame. Diouf next i daresay. Brooking must be ashamed and Mooro will turn in his grave.

Brady is the woman who once asked Ron Atkinson, how his son, Dalian, was getting on?

She is also the woman who attacks people for sexism, while working for a couple of men who have built their fortune on sexism.

To be stupid is one thing. To be a hypocrite is even worse. But to give a stupid hypocrite the run of a football club, really does take some believing.

That is not to take a cheap shot at you. My point is that it really sums up the impact that Sullivan and Gold have had.

Your comment about Brooking and Moore, could not be more apt.

People do not discriminate against you because you are female – they do it because you talk absolute tripe. The fact that you like Twitter proves the point. No-one should be proud to use Twitter – its a teenage girlie thing.

I don’t agree with that twitter is changing everything the majority of footballers, actors, singers and celebreties have it, the reason why women are looked down on in football is because they can’t play with men, I think they have to stop when it turns to 11 a side because it becomes to physical apparently, the problem is if a women says something no one agrees with they are told to shut up love but most of the blokes round me Chat shit no one says a word, a few years ago I was slating noble and because at the time I was like 17 some bloke told me to shut up I don’t know anything so I asked him what do you know what I don’t? I also said whats noble done that’s been decent? To be fair he was having a shocker, I’ve had a season ticket at west ham since I was like 9 and to be told what did I know about football wound me up considering I’d played the highest standard since the age of 11, the bloke didn’t really know what to say, my old man just laughed at him and suprise suprise noble got subbed, because of gender and age I don’t know why people are descriminated against

A lot men see football as the last bastion where they can get away from it all, wife, kids, domesticated life and in some cases women in general. The influx of more female fans is seen by some as a threat. ‘Can’t us men have one to ourselevs’ the rhetoric. Not being a woman I can’t tell but I feel tings have gotten better on that front, but I guess I wouldn’t really know.
