FIVE US of A celebrity Hammers

West Ham United have built up a reputation of having one of the most passionate fan bases in the UK. Traditionally, the majority of West Ham fans have been from the East End of London and Essex. However, the club’s celebrity fans suggest otherwise. When it comes to a list of celebrity fans West Ham are well represented. It has been reported that the Her Majesty the Queen is a Hammer. Furthermore, TV presenter Jeremy Kyle and actress Keira Knightley also follow the East London club. West Ham fans can also be found all over the world, especially in the United States of America. The following five US celebrities have expressed their love for the Hammers.

5. Chris Jericho

He may not be a household name in Britain nevertheless, the American wrestler has told his 534,000 followers on Twitter that his favourite soccer team is West Ham United. Jericho who represents the World Wrestling Entertainment was asked by a follower on twitter whether he liked soccer and if he did what his favourite team was. Jericho responded with West Ham and put himself in the long illustrious list of West Ham fans.

4. ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin

Wrestling legend and now Hollywood actor watched West Ham at Upton Park in 2009 after an invite from Kieron Dyer. ‘Stone Cold’ was interviewed at half-time and again after the game. He told the fans that he will start following the club when he returns to the states and he will visit the Boleyn Ground to cheer on the Hammers when he tours England again. The wrestling legend is one of many famous ‘tough guys’ that are West Ham fans such as boxers Frank Bruno, Lennox Lewis and Kevin Mitchell and actor Ray Winston.

3. Matt Damon

The Bourne Supremacy star has revealed he is a West Ham fan after he visited England a few years back. He was told by his British friends that following the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal is equivalent to supporting the New York Yankees, a action that is considered a felony if you are a Boston Red Socks fan like Damon. As a result, he chose to follow the Hammers and attempts to watch a game at Upton Park whenever he visits Britain.

2. Katy Perry

The American singer from California started to follow West Ham when she met her West Ham loving husband Russell Brand. She has publicly expressed her love for West Ham when ever she has performed on stage or when she has appeared on TV chat shows. Katy Perry impressed her husband when she took up the stage at the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards wearing a West Ham corset and hot pants. The lingerie was claret and blue complete with the team’s badges on her chest. Brand and Perry have allegedly broken up therefore, little is known whether the American singer still follows West Ham.

The most powerful figure in the United States of America is allegedly a West Ham fan. The US President has been a fan of the Hammers ever since he visited his half-sister who is married to a West Ham fan. They watched West Ham games together and the US president was impressed with what he saw. According to reports, Obama attempts to watch his beloved Hammers whenever he gets an opportunity. Next time the US president visits Britain he could be sitting next to you singing bubbles at the Boleyn Ground.
