A Tribute To Our Icon

|

Nineteen years ago to the day Bobby Moore one of West Ham’s finest ever players passed away. A player who meant so much to so many people and players alike, a gentleman on and off the pitch.

West Ham fans are planning a 6 minute song of “One Bobby Moore” from the 6th minute to show their respects to the great man. As a 19 year old myself this is my first opportunity to show my respect to a man I have heard so much about.

The fastest growing Hammers website is now on Facebook, click the link to be entered into our up and coming competitions http://www.facebook.com/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

Reading the book ‘Bring me the head of Trevor Brooking’ the memories of the day 19 years ago were more moving than I could ever imagine, reading it moves me to near tears. Sharon Nunn shares her memories of the day. She said; ‘At home watching the news, I just sat there in stunned silence’ ‘On the Friday I went to the ground- I had to go, I had to be there. I bought six red roses, had them sprayed C & B colours, and my favourite West Ham scarf. As I turned into Green Street what u saw was so overwhelming, the memories still move me to tears now. There were hundreds of people and you could not see the gates or railings for flowers, scarves and messages. It was a sea of claret and blue and said everything the great man and how he was our hero.”

Those words sum up everything that he represented for us fans, not just a player an idol, a legend, an inspiration. Bobby was the finest captain the club has ever had, cool and calm on the ball, a

barrier at the back. The best centre half the club has ever had. The great Pele described him as the best player he has ever played against. That is praise enough for a player who represented the

Hammers for 22 years making 646 appearance and scoring 27 goals.

After Bobby died Pele said; “He was my friend as well as the greatest defender I ever played against. The world has lost one of its greatest football players and an honourable gentleman.”

My dad tells me of the first home game after his death on the 6th of March, a game versus Wolverhampton Wanderers, fellow world cup winners Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst placed a floral tribute on the centre circle and a minute silence was impeccable observed. My dad a man who rarely shows him emotions tells me about how he was so moved he was brought to tears, I suspect with many other men and women that day. It was one of those days where you say “I was there”. West Ham fittingly went onto win that game 3-1.
