Gritty Irons!

|

Ten men, we’ve only got ten men’ I was at the Millwall game when this taunt was aimed at the men from The Den who despite being a man up for virtually the entire game still lost the one match they dare not lose.

Who could’ve predicted that chant was going to prove somewhat prophetic with regards to the subsequent two fixtures…two fixtures that in the same circumstance with Avram Grant in charge I guarantee we would’ve lost.

The fact that despite being a man down in the last three games, we’ve gone on to gather 7 points at such a crucial period of the campaign; whilst those beneath us are looking to ruthlessly capitalise on any error we may befall. Is testament to the spirit which flows within this current West Ham squad, a spirit that certainly didn’t exist last season as we squandered leads and limped pathetically out of the Premier League.

Throughout my time as a West Ham fan I have come to accept as I’m sure many of you have that yes on occasions it will all come together and we will beat Arsenal, Man United, Liverpool etc. but the price that we have to pay for always seemingly toppling the boys at the top is that we must put up with the meek away day showings in the north of England, barely getting out of first gear and blighted by defensive lapses as we stutter towards inevitable defeat.

Things seem to be different now under Sam, there have been one or two occasions this season where we have held aloft the white flag (Reading and Ipswich away come to mind) but these days we do seem a much more solid unit; epitomised by the fact that with Henri Lansbury between the sticks against Blackpool such was the organisation, determination and discipline provided by the nine Irons in front of him that apart from Kevin Phillips hitting the post they didn’t seriously look like exploiting the fact we had a midfielder in goal.

Last season at the DW stadium…the infamous game that saw us tumble out of the top flight; it was a result and performance that perfectly illustrated Avram Grant’s West Ham: a performance that showcased our attacking prowess as we surged into a 2-0 lead…only to let the lack of character, spirit and organisation which was also the hallmark of that season creep in as we lost the game 3-2.. I remember a mate of mine describing to me that during Soccer Saturday that fateful day Jeff Stelling asked Charlie Nicholas why West Ham didn’t just shut up shop at 2-0? To which champagne Charlie simply retorted “because they can’t”.

I think we can now. 15 to go and I’ve never been more convinced of promotion. The spirit and grit Sam has instilled is something we haven’t had for years and I reckon it will see us over the line.
