Rhode to nowhere

|

So this week saw us reportedly step up our interest in Huddersfield hot-shot Jordan Rhodes with a speculated £5 million bid. I must admit when I heard this news I wasn’t very hopeful… the culture that exists in football within the realms of Albion means that if you meet two very distinct criteria; i.e. you’re young and English you can go for virtually anything.

Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson all went to Liverpool for a combined fee of around 77 million. Liverpool were stupid enough to bow to this particular culture and are now lumbered with three players who will quite simply never live up to their respective price-tags and offer little in the way of resale value.

Bearing all this in mind I was amazed that when it was revealed Huddersfield wanted 8 million for Rhodes there were actually fans who wanted Messer’s Gold and Sullivan to stump up the cash; Twitter was awash on Wednesday night with Hammers fans arguing the merits of this potential transfer; some pleading with David Gold to dig a little deeper, some backing his decision not to.

I must admit I simply couldn’t understand those who declared we should stump up 8 million for a player only proven at League 1 level and who contextually would cost more than the more tangible talents of Craig Bellamy and Dean Ashton. I struggled to believe that there were fans out there who were convinced that Jordan Rhodes was the only man we could sign this window who could solve our goal-scoring problems, that he and he alone held the key to promotion; such a limited view is a dangerous thing…just ask Liverpool in a couple seasons when they try to unload their aforementioned ‘young, English talents’.

Last January we scoured the market and found Demba Ba amidst the predictable dross and he became an instant goal-scoring sensation. It’s precisely this example we should be following as we look to solve our goal-scoring issues; instead of pandering to market forces which state ‘if you were born in England and look decent you can go for silly money.’

A better deal is out there. I’m convinced of it.

Jordan Rhodes is a jock not English!!!!

  • Dan says:

Er Rhodes is English!! Born in oldham. Plays for Scotland coz he’s not good enough to play for England.

I hate people that needlessly criticise people on the web. The whole point of the article isn’t about Rhode’s nationality and was just an honest mistake! The mistake doesn’t detract from what is a superb and well written article!

yeah sorry about that. We’re both thicko’s who just love scoring meaningless points aganst other people. We also pick a lot of people up for their online spelling mistakes and use of the english language. We have now eloped together and hope to have a lot of fun playing hide the sausage.

    Haha well put mike

Nobody at Huddersfield have valued him at £8m, he is not for sale in January at any price.. I don’t know how much clearer our great chairman can make it!! Still only 21 & scored 73 goals in just over 2.5 seasons.. Do not underestimate this lad, he will go to the very top & do the business there, mark my words! Just not in January.. Understand??

Im not sure what constitutes a “superb and well written article” what its factually incorrect.

As the above poster wrote, there has never been any evaluation on Jordan by the club purely because Dean Hoyle made it 100% clear that he will not be sold in Jan.

Despite that, West Ham continued to chase and speculate and in my view “unsettle” the player if you know the chap personally then he is such a loyal level headed young man that his head hasnt been turned.

You offer £10m and the answer would still be the same. Good luck in your search for another striker.

The day club in League 1 can turn a 10 million pound bid for a player is the day The SPL overtakes the prem. You’re living in cloud cuckoo land!

  • GoodcatHTAFC says:

Well you just keep watching sunshine while we keep knocking your bids out the park.. Even when he does leave (in the summer) it will be to a big club like Spurs, not West Ham.

  • Kwame says:

Ok firstly I wrote this article about how we shouln’t sign Rhodes because the fee was too much. Why Huddersfield fans are coming on here and saying ya weren’t ganna sell him anyway I find very strange!
Secondly GoodcatHTAFC I think you’ll find over the history of West Ham we’ve attracted players with far bigger reputations than Jordan Rhodes! So don’t come ‘ere as if we’re a club that can’t attract top names.
Once we’re back in the prem you’ll see the big names roll in.

Hilarious speculation…football talk should be about football…and certainley not money. Huddersfield certainley dont need 10million…the player is worth more on the park. Clubs, sky, and football in general needs to learn that streotypes of larger clubs coming in to buy from lower divisions sometimes just isnt possible. The club in question have said he is not for sale. Also…sometimes players shine above the streotypes of ‘not having proven themselves in the top league’…watch him…why on earth would teams only a division above him try to sign someone of his undoubted quality? A player who is steadily proving themselves yes, nicky maynatd etc, but i think its fairly clear that championship teams arent going to tempt rhodes!!! The club say he is not for sale…and why should he be!? Too many silly assumptions in ‘business’ football now…

I think Jordan roades is worth every penny, he has sorted in both league one, and the championship, and was top scoere in both years, of course the lad is worth the money, no question, very good valur for money, and if I was big Sam I would have got him along time ago, he is worth 8 million all day long. So come on westham, go and get him now. Macca , westham.
